I got a tire tread depth gauge in order to check wear on my tires. My question is; is the tread depth measured in the deepest part of groove? If so, I still have another mm or so of wear before I need to think about replacing, since the deepest part of the tread is nearly 4mm. Correct?

There are small arrows on the outside of the tyre, if you find the marking and follow it in to close to tread around middle of tyre you will find a in that grove a small raised up bit ( in the tread groove) and you use depth gauge just beside that on the centre of tyre side. hope that makes sense, I will post a photo of what I mean when I can, in NZ depth cannot be less than 1.5mm

Regularly inspect the tire tread depth to ensure that adequate tread remains. Tires have small wear bars molded into the tread grooves. When the tread is worn down to the level of the wear bars (indicating 1/32 inches of tread remaining), the wear bars become exposed and the tire should be replaced. Some manufacturers recommend replac- ing the tire when there are 2/32 or 3/32 inches of tread remaining.

Here is what I mean

First photo is arrow, then go to middle and you will see where my finger is you use gauge, just a few mm's below my finger you should be able to make out the raised bit of rubber in the groove to mark where to measure.

Most tires have wear bars that when flush with the surface of the tire indicate the tire needs to be replaced.

Thank you, I will look for those marks. The owner's manual says tread depth should be no less than 2-3mm, depending on how high a speed the bike is usually ridden at.

Tires do wear unevenly, no thanks to the road camber angle. My country is left hand drive, so the tires wears out quicker on the right side. Sometimes, the thread wears out over the area where the wear-markers are not present, so some extra observation is needed.

My Pirelli Scorpion Trails front are worn out (unevenly) at less than 12k km. Great grip in the wet and dry but wish it has better mileage. Next up, would be Bridgestone T30.

On a car, this tire would have being underinflated to wear like that ...

Phil - wouldn't underinflation wear TWO places, either side of the center.

Looks like what would be OVER inflation in a car tire, but is normal in bike tires that spent more time upright as opposed to "heeled over".

According to AJ (tire owner), he had inflated over the stock tire as this one was one size off (can't remember which way). He is a pretty aggresive rider, and I am sure the 150HP on that Ducati also helped to scrub some of the tread off the rear...
