Soooooo.....

Apparently the swing arm spool bolt locations are 7mm?? as opposed to 10mm!?! Bought 10mm spools for my 15' versys and they are WAY too big.... I used my tap and dye set to verify thread size (didn't re tap the spool mount)... Indeed the bolts were 10mm 1.25 and the bikes spool mounting holes are seemingly 7mm.... Can't get the 8mm tap to start to screw in....

Thoughts?! Am I going crazy? The spools mount to the little welded on tabs on the bottom of the swing arms?! I can't even tap the hole to 10mm or the walls would be paper thin....

Yeah I'm thinking it must be 6mm.... Not sure I can be sure without an actual bolt to verify. Not sure how reliable my thread chaser is for this. I just know the 10mm bolt is much much bigger than what the hole allows (let the "that's what she said" jokes insue...)

The oil pan bolt didn't change, oil filter filter didn't change..... Can confirm no model differences there for sure!

There are 6mm swingarm spools for some Yamaha R6, R1 models, but this doesn't add up... Are yours not as seen in this high res photo?

Well yeah if the spool is supposed to bolt to that little tab that's welded to the swing arm... South of the center axle bolt and between the axle bolt and exhaust in the pic... You can see the shiny rotor through the hole in the pic... That bolt hole doesn't come close to fitting the 10mm spools I picked up today....

I'm so confused! The spools bolt to that tab on the swing arm near the axle nut right?

I have the 2015 model 650

I just took a photo with the 8mm installed and holding a 6mm next to it for comparison
10mm would be way to large
the bolt i used is a 8mm by 1.25 threads

So, you need M8 X 1.25 swingarm spools instead for 2015 Versys 650... If you have a good M8 X 1.25 tap, it should work.

You can always sell your M10 X 1.25 spools to a 2007-2014 Versys 650 owner if you can't exchange them.

Thank you!

I appreciate the help guys! A picture really is worth a thousand words!

Im sure I can swap out for the right size when I go back to the dealer. As for tapping it out to 10mm... I don't think the tab is big enough (walls thick enough) to keep integrity if bored out to 10mm.

:thanx:

...great. I've got 10 mms coming in from RevZilla this week for my 650 LT. Should've done a deeper forum search on the subject. Thanks to all for the info regardless.

Kind of makes you wonder WHY Kawasaki did that? With the added weight of the factory bags on the LT model, it doesn't make sense to go with a smaller bolt for the swingarm spool.

I wonder if you have a Friday bike and the frame had incorrect spool lugs welded on from another bike.

I'd be taking your spool bolts to the dealer and see what other Mk3 spool lugs measure upto.

Well tonight settles it. Installed 8mm spools on my LT today.... The pic already said it but figured I'd follow up regardless.

No idea why they would change this either... The dealer was just as surprised lol!

So in conclusion.... I'll shrug and say :dgi:

They ARE 8mm! What I've done is to just run an 8mm bolt in w/ a nut used as a "jam" nut to ensure the "spool" doesn't fall out.

I'll get PROPER 8mm spools down in AZ over the winter.

M8-1.25 did not fit my 2017. Not sure what to do.

What specific bolt size worked?

Thanks.

M8 X 1.25 Tap ?

I would suggest calling the dealer, and think it is likely M8 X 1.25, when I got my 2015, I thought the same thing, one suggestion is try threading in from the back side. I found my first thread was filled with a bit of paint, used a 8 X 1.25 thread chaser ( cheap China tap), no tap handle required, both threads where the same.

Great, thanks.

I'll take a tap to it and see if it cleans it out.
