I recently picked up a used 2011 with 8400 miles on it. While inspecting the bike, I noticed some white residue on the sides of the coolant reservoir, above the fluid. After doing some searching, I found this:

...if whitish cotton -like wafts are observed, aluminum parts in the cooling system are corroded.

It seems I may have corrosion, based on this description. The coolant level is good, and I have not experienced overheating in the short time I've owned the bike. What's the best way to deal with this? Full flush with a specific product?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Was just looking at my '11 and it's similar to that. Don't think I'm gonna worry about it though, it's only 6 mo old and it's in a garage most of the time...

I got this used, and although it seems early for this bike to have issues, you never know how a PO treated te thing.

I will Do the flush - at least with distilled water. That way I get back to a clean slate.
By peeping inside the radiator through the radiator cap filler hole, you can tell if there are any corrosion or if it needs the radiator flush additive treatment. Mine is a 2011 and have the same whitish residue. Visually inspection for corrosion is negative, so I just flush it with clean soft water until it is clear, and add in a mixture of distilled water, Toyota Long Life Coolant, and Motul MoCool. I did wash the cap and the expansion tank.

Any corroding aluminum residue may be only leftover from the original machining and assembly process... I also removed the water pump cover and impeller when I flushed mine out to clean and grease the seals, and removed some engine paint overspray that was flaking off in the water passage inlet and at the outlet behind thermostat... Apply grease to cover O-ring as well when reinstalling. I had to replace thermostat cover O-ring that had shrunk and hardened, after removing cover.

For comparison

I just checked my 2011.
Picked it up in November.
5200 miles.
No white residue.
Just the green coolant.
