I dub this: The unnecessary service (for the peace of mind).
Here is how my 2007. Versys with 20200 Km on the clock faired.

  • - Valve check: All in the middle of the specification. Nothing touched.
  • - Spark plugs: Still in good operating condition but replaced with new NGKs. My mechanic tells me I'm an idiot for replacing iridium spark plugs at anything less then 100,000km.
  • - Air filter: Reasonably dirty after 10,000km since last service. Cleaned and lubed.
  • - Fork oil: Replaced with Motul 10W. Stock oil was still newish and reddish in color. I got one more 'you're an idiot for doing this' from my mechanic. We didn't take the spring off so it was an easy job without any specialty tools.
  • - New front brake lines from HEL. Everything fits in place and bolts easily. No issues with Zeta hand guards.
  • - New front EBC Sintered brake pads. Stock ones still had 20-30% of life in them. (Guess what mechanic told me.)
  • - DIY: Welded a large shim on the bottom of the side-stand's foot so it wouldn't sink in soft terrain.

Conclusion:
I'm very pleased with the valve situation, especially when nearly everyone reported some tightness/looseness. I decided to improve the brakes after a few missed braking points and poor feel (with hindsight, there might have been some air in the lines). I still haven't felt the benefit of the new lines and pads because I didn't have the time to 'set' the pads on the road. I'll report when they start gripping the brake discs better.
We checked the chain and sprockets and only front sprocket shows a little wear, but not enough to change the whole set.
I didn't have a photo-camera with me so I don't have any pictures to show you. Here is how my side stand foot looks. A dirty job but it will serve.

I found my 15k mile check pretty useless also. I think the shop manual lists the interval to be 24k miles rather than the 15k miles cited in the owner's manual. Maybe it's Kawasaki's way of drumming up service work for the dealers by printing the interval as 15k in the owner's manual. :(
