Just purchased a new '15 Versys 650LT and very pleased with the bike.

On page 25 of the Owner's Manual, it states the engine oil capacity is 2.4 US quarts. However on page 105, it states the engine oil capacity with filter change is 1.9 US quarts. Anyone know which is correct? First 600 mile oil change is coming up quick.

You're not going to get all the oil out during a change unless you put a lot of effort into it. Mine usually took right at 2 quarts sometimes a tad more...

It's hard to get all the oil out of an engine when you change the oil. You will probably need around 2 quarts. Do you have a little round window on the side of the engine? Are you going to use a stock or oversized filter? Can you get the bike perfectly upright while you check the oil?

My old Yamaha TDM850 is a dry sump engine, with a dipstick in the remote tank. You have to warm up the engine, then check the oil level fairly quickly before some drains back into the engine out of the tank.

Buy an extra quart, use it if needed. Read the manual instructions for changing oil.

Many vehicles have two or three oil capacities listed:
- the total capacity ie. if you received a totally dry engine from the factory and filled it,
- the amount that gets replaced when you also replace the filter,
- the amount that gets replaced when you leave the oil filter (which most people wouldn't do).

From the maintenance standpoint, you're not concerned with the first one, you'll never have an opportunity to fill a dry engine.

The pre-2015 Versys manual has this (on page 98):
Capacity:
1.7 L (1.8 US qt) (when filter is not removed)
1.9 L (2.0 US qt) (when filter is removed)
2.4 L (2.5 US qt) (when engine is completely dry)
And as others have said, when you're replacing oil, you might end up filling a bit more or less, depending on how thorough your draining was. Don't worry about leaving a few drops of old oil in, it's unavoidable.

2015 capacity (page 2-34, 2015 SERVICE MANUAL.)
1.6 L (1.7 US qt) - filter NOT removed
1.8 L (1.9 US qt) - filter removed
2.3 L (2.4 US qt) - DRY engine.

The REASON for the difference, between '15s and earlier Vs, is that the NEW V has the drain on the LEFT-side of the sump, NOT on the bottom. I'm pretty sure that the long "tit" hanging down, w/ the drain plug at the lowest point, accounts for THAT .1 L of oil....

I just did the second oil change on my '15LT. Both times it took a bit more than 2qts including filter. The first time it was right at the lower level line with 2 qts added. The second time it was 2.3 qts to get it to just below the upper level line. I change the oil using a rear track stand which lifts the rear wheel a couple of inches off the ground.

Let me suggest that you drain your oil on the sidestand (as in the OWNERS MANUAL), as the way you're doing it is making it "nose-down" instead of level.

Anyone found a oil filter "off the shelf" instead of buying the high priced ones at the dealer?

Bosch 3300 you can pick up at most auto parts stores for about $5.00

what are you paying for the replacement element as well. I'm trying to get costs down and eliminate shipping

Markie - I seem to remember it was around $100 when Joe got it, NOT over $1000!

The element is re-usable just clean it with a degreaser. I just use Goop Hand Cleaner (Don't use the one with pumice) After 5 years and 2 bikes i finally used the second O-Ring that came with it.

a OEM filter may cost a few dollars more, but you get a very high quality oil filter for your money
I think it was Invader who had pictures of a after market and OEM filters cut in half
after I looked at those pictures, I will buy OEM from now own for my V

I noticed that same discrepancy in the manual. My 15 has taken about 2.3 quarts at every oil change. I let it drain out as much as possible with the bike straight up and level.
