I put ZETA XC guards onto my '08 and '09, and they protected stuff several times, including a low-side at 20 to 30 mph (third pic) which I covered up w/ a bit of reflective tape.
I like to remove the plastic 'covers' when the weather is hot, to allow airflow over my hands, cooling them. The 'covers' on the Gen 3s are attached from the INSIDE, making it a "chore" to remove them (I modded mine to remove them from the outside - here's the link: http://www.kawasakiversys.com/forums/9-technical-discussion/108490-modifying-gen-3-handguards.html ), which is WHY I recommended the ZETAs.
