Power commander or programmer??

Thinking about buying a power commander v for the versys. Anyone have it on there bike? pros/cons? waste of money? Like to hear your thoughts. Thanks

I've read up on it lately wrt my second bike, and my takeaway was that Rapid Bike Evo is probably a better bang for the buck than PCV. I haven't done research about the Versys, but maybe check it out

The auto-learning mode is a big plus, you have to pay for an extra module if you want it in PC.

Rapid Bike can modify the closed loop regime, that is affect low-mid RPMs and smooth out that range, while PC can only influence the map for the open loop regime, that is high RPM & high speed. For a Versys, I'd say smoothing out the midrange is probably more important than edging up that extra pony near the redline. Rapid Bike Evo also does open loop, so you may get that peak HP boost anyway.

RB kits can be transferred between different models of bike, with you just needing to buy a bike-specific set of connectors. I'm not sure but I think PCV is tied to a bike.

Before you spend you money and time on a power commander I would get in touch with Steve in Sunny Florida. Send him a PM as is a member on this forum.

Steve is a first class engine builder/tuner and has a great ECU flash for the V-650. He is also working on a flash for the V-1000 too.

He can explain, in detail, what a flash will do for you bike vs what a power commandeer can and cannot do.

Trust me. It will be well worth your time to talk to him.

The other thing I would say is don't expect miracles. Kawasaki already did a pretty good job of tuning this engine for its intended application.

Most people feel that Kawasaki did what they had to do in order to pass emissions, which meant the engine could work better (as in, smoother, not necessarily stronger) if we're okay with burning some more fuel.

This depends on your existing tune though. Mk3 V650s came out with 6 different ECUs for different markets, some are probably rougher than others.

If you are after more power, no.

1. skip piggybacks. they are all a nightmare.

2. buy a more powerful bike if that's what you want.


I went deep down the rabbit hole modding my grom.... I noe know that modding bikes for power is kinda silly when you are in the low displacement classes.

Exactly! I can only speak for my 2015 650 N. American model but Steves flash has made a real improvement in the lower mid to upper mid range. Plus the smoothness of the throttle. With a 15T 44T gear ratio 35 KPH in first gear is about 5000RPM. And on and on through the lower gears. Crack it in 3rd now and you will hear a Kawi midrange bark with the stock muffler. Dont remember hearing that before. Cant comment on Power Commander but doesnt it trick out the system by sending a colder temp reading to the ECU so it lets out more "choked" fuel? Anyways,for my style of riding,up and down twisties etc. I recommend the Shodabeen flash. Dont want or need a bigger bike now.

I agree 100%, it really has made a stunning difference! I was really expecting a modest improvement but it really has transformed my 2016 650.

A 650 is not a 300. Totally different engines. Different cam timing, different redline, different use cases, pretty much different everything. I don't have a lot of seat time on the 300 right now, but I feel like the stock gearing and program is well suited for a commuter bike, which is what I use it for. Obviously if you use it for other things, you might not be satisfied, you might want more high end power, or smoother low end power, or something like that. But it's still a 300, and already at a fairly high state of tune due to its Ninja heritage.
