OBVIOUSLY it needs to be on the road some time, so street legal is a must.

While I realize there are tons of makes and models, the ONLY 2 I'm looking for feedback on are the 2 I've listed. Specifically, 2012 dr650, and a 2014 crf250l.

I realize they are pretty different but, they are the two I'm seriously considering. The 650 has 5k miles on it, and the crf is new (fuel injected). Both similar money.

Does anyone have any first hand experience with the goods, the bads, or the uglies with either of these?

OH, 2 things. LIGHT is important, due to an injury, picking up "big" bikes that are taking a dirt nap-
the other, I'll be letting my teenage son ride it (rarely, but some), and teaching my wife on it (not spending the money on her one until she learns/commits)...
Will be ridden primarily on farm, secondary, and fire roads, just to get to single/double track in the mountains (few to 20-30 miles TOPS).
For size consideration: wife and I both 5' 10". I'm 165lbs, she's a bit lighter. Son is near my size and is currently riding a kx80 (yeah, too small).

For what you are suggesting you want to use the bike for, I say the Honda Hands down. It's Lighter ( a little) but geared a tad lower and will be easier to handle on single track. However if your riding morphs into straying further and further away, I would say the dr. The little Honda doesn't have the lungs for prolonged highway rides in a comfortable manner. No, I take that Back, It Can and does do it, just the Dr would be better for those scenarios. For the record, I owned a 2003 DR 650 that I put 23,000 miles on. It is gone but not forgotten!

"light" to me means not the 650

maybe a 400 instead of a 650?

I'm eyeing up 250's right now for similar reasons. want something more dirt specific to be with my son as he starts learning on his 50 next year and so I can improve my own skills.

I TOO vote for the 250.

The latest issue of CYCLE WORLD (November) has a VG article about modding a Yamaha in "ADV lite".

HUGE difference between a 300# 250 and a 430# 650 when you're 'dancing' thru the woods, OR picking it up after you 'crash'.

My LAST 'serious' dirt-bike was an '82 CanAm Qualifier 400. It weighed 250#, had about 40 hp, w/ 12" suspension on each end, and would top out at 105 mph in 5th...! (And it could 'ford' 36" of water!)

Pics are small, but BEST I found.

Get them seated on it, start it, show them how to pull in the clutch and put it into gear... THEN stand WAY-Y-Y back....

When it comes to a stop, EITHER get out the bandages, OR call for a para-medic....

But DON'T laugh or crack a smile...!

PROBABLY a better idea - get them onto an MSF course.

Try and find a mini bike for them to ride then go to a field with some nice soft dirt for them to practice. Hurts less than pavement...
