Adventure Tourers in Italy

I have just returned from a 2 week bicycle tour in Italy (Tuscany).

While there, I noticed that most the motorcycles on the road were adventure touring type (sit up right) and a few UJM standard type motorcycles. Mostly Ducati, BMW (airheads), Aprialia, etc.

In the Milwaukee, WI, its mostly Harleys and a few sport bikes and very few Versys or adventure tourers.

Quite a contrast.

Of course, Rome was mostly Smart Cars, small Fiats, small everythings, scooters, 50cc super-motards, etc. The wild driving was beyond comprehension. ...

Hey, good trip. My wife and I will be doing the same thing this summer on our bicycles. (Tuscany)

You are right about the bikes. We covered France last year and their bike choice was also similarly noted.

Things are different in North America. For some reason, we love our technology when it comes to our smart phones, But chrome bikes from the 60s rule the roust here.

My local dealership has a "demo" KTM 1190 sport bike that they brought in this spring to test the market. In one year, it was test driven 9 times. Twice by me, yet no orders placed all year. That same dealer sells 3-4 $30,000, 950 pound Harleys a week.

I think that the typical "expensive" motorcycle buyer in the North America are retired or semi retired folks that prefer a rotary phone.
