1980 XS400 Special II (rebuild)

Before I put my hands on it:

Would not run, engine free, looks like this guy wasn't very careful. Blinkers bent or broken, big dent in the tank.

Torn down for inspection and cleaning.

Stuck needle valve in left carburetor, main jets both sides plugged, needle coated in "varnish" in left carb, broken o ring on needle valve assembly left carb, pilot jet left carb plugged. Has spark (after I reattached the right side spark plug cap).

Air filters crumbled in my fingers, boot is torn. Going to replace with pod type filters and a crankcase breather.

Drum brakes front and back. Scary! Looks like a fun project.

The last old bike I had used hydraulic discs in front. Piston moves once, won't move again. Faceplant in the driveway.

Given the amount of varnish and crud, did you look at inside of tank? Is the fuel delivery to the carbs good?

The tank was the cleanest part of the bike. Main jet had some blockage, didn't try to put it back together yet.

Nice bike. I lusted after one of those as a teenager back in the 70's. It wasn't the special model though, it was more of a standard. Yam also made a nice 500, with DOHC. Good luck, carbs can be challenging.
