The helmet and backpack saved his day. The helmet took a direct hit on the barrier rail.

Falling down is Ok but not without proper Gear's

Ah....the impetuousness of youth.

Scooter racing is tricky, particularly when you lock the rear in the middle of a "high speed" turn on Mulholland. Good thing he had his Camelbak on, eh? If you noticed, he has to climb down the hill to retrieve his "Froggs Toggs" motorcycle boots. Chips probably got him for fine, too.

This stuff is too funny!

Garage
Why did he put his foot down?

Just before he crashed he put his left foot out - is that normal for a scooter?

Although I have had Miss Jaffa (Burnt Orange 2007 Versys) for a while, I still have a lot to learn.

Funny stuff! The helmet did nothing for him. He would have walked away no matter how he was 'geared up'. Low speed low side. He'll be a little sore, have a few strawberries, but fine in the end. Pride will be hurt more than anything....

I don't think its a good idea to put your foot down as there is a lot of weight shift. As scooters has one sided engines putting you foot down on a corner alters the CG and plus the weight shift the bike is definitely going down.

Here is what I think happened:

He noticed he was going in hot and needed to lean further than he was comfortable with, to make the turn.
He put his foot out to catch himself, and leaned less. This makes him go wide, causing him to go hard on the rear brake, locking up the rear wheel.

If he had not panicked, stayed off the rear brake and just did a "lean it like you mean it", he would have been just fine.
