Unhappy buyer ?

I sold my 2003 XR650R dirt bike several months ago with the MSO to a guy thru craigslist. I just received an email from him that he had to get a bonded title because I never put the bike in my name (his words) and it cost $150, he want me to foot half the bill, does this make sense ? I was going to make the bike street legal and had purchased most of the parts which I sold to him with the deal, so now he thinks I should cover half the cost of the bonded title to make it street legal. What do you guys think, its only $75 but I think he`s nuts.

I see you just had the MSO from the dealership. If you never titled the bike in your name then he is in the right and is experiencing a huge ass pain. I was on the receiving end of a purchase with this issue and it sucked. If you never registered the bike then he is in the right and I'd probably help him out.

Its a dirt bike, they do not come with a title because they do not require one, the come with a MSO manufacturer's statement of origin which proves its not stolen and was built by the manufacturer, he made it street legal and that would require a bonded title.

Do you have to title bikes in your state? If you only had the MSO then he should have known what he was getting himself into. Buyer beware.

Considering that it was months ago I would tell him it was sold as is and move on.

The guy bought it knowing it was never titled and you sold it as a dirtbike. I would say you have no obligation whatsoever to help him title the bike.

Tell him to screw off.

If you sold it with MSO and not a title it's his problem. I would however help him out by signing any papers he may need.

Yep, the cost is on him unless you lead him to think he could get a title easily. I wouldn't kick back any cash, but I would help him as much as I could with paperwork, etc.

tragerbon Hi.

I am not sure what MSO means and what was the S & P deal. But if you share his pain and apart with $75, then you go a long way in the name of humanity, of couse you can also "Sc##@ him, if that is what you what and what will you acheive by that, just a thought.
After all, we are bikers, good or bad it comes as a package.

You could also look at this another way. You sold him a dirt bike which was worth $xxx. Now that it has a title it is worth $xxx more than what he paid for it. If you split the title fee then you should expect to get back half of the increased value.

MSO=Manufacturers Statement of Origin

You bought it as a dirt bike, not street legal, and sold it the same way.
I also say screw him.

Help the guy out. Maybe he wasn't happy with the colour too and you could chip in on a paint job...or perhaps the tires were too worn. Maybe he'd like the seat recovered....where does it stop....
You made a deal that was fair. Let it be.

yeah see, helping with paper work is a worthy kindness.

But bailing him out cuz he doesn't know how the game is played is his problem.

( and besides, if he could afford to buy the bike and do the conversion with the parts YOU included in the sale then, HE can afford to pay the bond ).

Say " have a nice day" and walk away.

OK, I'll shut up now!

I say BS, it is his responsibility to find out the rules before buying. You had a dirt bike with the paperwork you needed to prove ownership. If he decided to put on the street it is his problem not yours. I say no way give him $75, it is his problem. That would be like selling someone a car without lic. and they get a ticket. Would you feel responsible for that too.....

When ever I buy a bike for the street, after I ask about condition and miles, I ask "do you have the title?". No title no buy. I'd help him with paperwork, just not the green kind.

Don't pay, he's whining and should have known what he was buying. And for 75 bucks? Give me a break.
