It's actually a well engineered jump to take, with a very smooth ramp, and a steep downgrade for the landing... Skiers have to push themselves up on the ramp as hard as they can with their legs to increase their jump distance.

Whenever I see someone do something like that I always wonder how they worked up to it.
Obviously you don't just do it without ever having done something similar or without working up to it on a smaller scale.
