"Militia" is actually defined by federal statute. The 2nd Amendment is designed to keep in the hand of citizens the same sort of arms that would be carried by an ordinary soldier (see Federalist Papers). The founding fathers did not trust government or standing armies. Jefferson was brilliant in some ways, not so much in others.

can't argue with that...guess what I was trying to say is the two clauses spell out what they meant the "well armed" militias ARE FOR...the Article also points out..that while the states are responsible for the "officers and companies" it's the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT that controls them...for the record even Jefferson recanted his blood for tyrants idea...
Madison wrote the 2nd admendment..not Jefferson..so Tom's blood for tyrants isn't actually tied to the 2nd admendment..as some have been led to believe...Madison..who Jefferson wrote that comment to in a letter..DID NOT AGREE...just a little disconnect there..a little one...

I think it is "well regulated". There is also the organized militia and the unorganized militia.

oops did I make a mistake in wording? gaaahhhhh... no matter it certainly doesn't imply what "popular" opinion on the right thinks...
