New Gear Day - Camping

I had a great trip last summer from San Francisco up to Puget Sound area through the Sierra Nevadas, Cascades, and back along the coast.

I had mostly car camping gear and not much that's geared towards backpackers (i.e., smaller, lighter). I had a huge dry sack that had a bunch of stuff in it. The biggest and heaviest item was a wide, old thermarest. It was comfy with the foam center, but was big and heavy. I just picked up an ALPS mountain gear "Nimbus" Long air pad. It doesn't have the foam center so is lighter and packs smaller. It's also not self inflating, but it has a handy, little built in hand pump that works pretty well.

It's about 12" wide rolled up, by a about 3 or 4" diameter. Weighs in at just over a pound. I got it for just over $40 shipped through the REI outlet which was offering it at 35% off, plus I had a member coupon for another 35% off. WooHoo!

This is for the regular version. I got the long...

It might not be as comfortable as the thermarest, but it'll be good enough and will be better for the moto camping.

I can't wait for this year's trip back up to Puget Sound taking some different routes!

Just saw this. The joey chair as alternative to the helinox chair one or the REI Flex Lite Chair.
This will hold more weight its wider and taller when set up. And the price is great to for the size it packs upto.
I will be ordering one soon.

I've got the REI Flex Lite chair. I used it last year. It looks pretty much exactly the same as that. It worked out great, and yeah, does pack nice and small. I was on the fence about a chair, but decided it would be really nice to have something to kick back in by the fire in the evenings and glad I had it.
