And, as before the war, nothing will change; the tribal warlords will take over the north, the Taliban will have the south, the "president" will get richer, and the general population will suffer.

I have great respect for the military men and women and I wish that our government's leaders would have to go to war alongside them.

I'm posting this here from an original post by ATYC, as I didn't think my reply was pertinent to "Readers Rides".

Not a hijack at all, and I agree that ten was too many.

To add to our military people's misery is the shameful treatment of our returning vets; closing veterans affairs offices, fighting vets on pensions and compensation, and lack of psychological help resulting in many suicides.
But the feds put on a big show of token gratitude to make themselves look good.

Almost 4,000 lives lost Worldwide & for what????

Who instigated it in the 1st place?

Is this still a legacy of the warmonger G.W.Bush!?!?!

(I don't want to start a political discussion on what is a memorial to all of our troops killed, but I cannot convey just how much hatred I have for that man!)

Sorry off topic on afganstan but on topic of how bad trops can be treated, in 1958 The New Zealand Navy provided support for the British nuclear testing program at Christmas and Malden Islands.

551 New Zealand sailors served aboard the frigates HMNZS Pukaki and Rotoiti, which acted as supply ships and provided weather monitoring and surveillance. They were stationed between 50 and 150 nautical miles from ground zero during the explosions

Of the 500 New Zealanders who served at Operation Grapple, less than 150 are still alive.

Still battling the government for compensation to this day

I'm not sure whether or not New Zealanders served in 'Nam alongside the Aussies, but those were the "forgotten" soldiers in that war.... BTW, OVER 50,000 Canadians served in the US armed services in the Viet Nam War....

I'm NOT sure if I can understand your point: IF a person was a member of the navy in 1958 (say, at the age of 20...), then that person would be pretty much 76 years or MORE, now. IF he'd been 30 to 40, then he would be 86 to 96, which MIGHT explain why only 150 remain out of the 500....

NZ served in nam, http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/war/vietnam-war
My point on the sailors Ed, was a lot died before their time or had reduced quality of life due to various sickness associated with being exposed to the nuclear blast and the families carry on the fight to this day for appropriate compensation.

Great Canadian loss- Janet Vanderbeek, mother of former Olympic skier and actual TSN reporter Kelly Vanderbeek, died a hero while helping road accident victims... They are actually from my hometown. Mr Vanderbeek was our family's chiroprator when Kelly was born, then started skiing locally.

"03/21/14, Kabul, Afghanistan

A Canadian citizen is dead after Taliban gunmen killed nine people in a luxury hotel in Kabul.
Three other foreigners were also killed Thursday night. They were from India, New Zealand and Pakistan."

And the beat goes on. Why do we even bother wasting lives and billions of dollars in those Islamic sh*t hole countries? Let them kill each other into eternity, we will only bring their jihad here if we mess with their crib.

This is in the Off Topic Discussions.

I'm not surprised you need this explained, Nitpick... I decided it was related enough to a thread titled "Canada" and involving deaths, and it wasn't big enough for its own thread.

This maybe the first ban, but I would agree. He directly calls another member a curse word and admits to trying to insight the member.

We don't need or want that on this forum.
