I still can't believe lane-splitting is allowed in any state. I live in Texas, and even if it were legal here, you get a door in your leg or tobacco spit on your face shield if you tried it. Plus, it's freaking dangerous. You guys that do it, please be safe.

I've seen a lot of threads about lane splitting over the years, it seems like most people that are against it, don't like it because it makes you ride like an idiot. The guy in the video would ride like an idiot whether lane splitting were legal or not.

If it were legal here, I most definitely would do it, mostly to keep ahead of traffic and out of danger. The problem is too many people see it as a reason to ride like an idiot, so it won't ever be legal here.

I would settle for it to just be legal at red lights! (Though not done like the rider in the video.)

When I lived in Orlando, FL, I would filter at traffic lights because it could take 3 or 4 light cycles to get through them. I felt like I was helping the cars out because I was not taking up a space that would cause a car to wait an extra cycle. Some cagers were jealous and tried to take vigilante measures to impede my progress, but they were usually stopped too close to the car in front to move over enough to block me. I didn't blame them for their frustration.
If I were in California, I would filter and lane split if traffic was crawling. Splitting when traffic is doing 70 is just stupid.

The problem is that being ahead of traffic is not the safest place to be, it's actually one of the least safest places.
The last thing you want to do is be the first vehicle through an intersection, the last thing you want to do is set yourself up to go through the next intersection without an escort, the last place you want to be at the next traffic light is right in front of the last person you pissed off.
I don't have any issue with you or anyone else who chooses to split but to do it for "safety", you are misleading yourself and others.
The "safety" argument for splitting has always been to avoid getting rearended, it's a valid concern, being rearended is the thrid most common type of motorcycle accident, but the second most common type of accident is getting encroached from the side at intersections and crossroads.
So if you want to split, do it to save time, keep the bike or yourself from overheating or just for convenience, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's for "safety".

I cant say it bothers me, in fact it was fun watching guys (or maybe they were girls) with way more skill and nerve than me put on a show.pretty catchy tune playing as well--however, they may be sowing a lot of ill will towards all people on motorcycles which could bite me in the ass someday---

I don't think lane splitting is legal on secondary roads that would have traffic lights. Lane splitting is a tool to use on the interstate where there is limited access and egress. Riding in the gaps between packs of cars is the best place to be when on an interstate.

On secondary roads, where there are traffic lights, filtering to the front of the line at a light and making sure cross traffic is stopped prior to proceeding into the intersection is safer than being in the pack of cars taking off from the light.

For me, riding on roads with a lot of potential left turners is high risk. I avoid those roads as much as possible by finding alternate routes to get to my destination. But, when I have to ride on 'shopping row', I will ride off the rear driver's side corner of the car in front of me to lessen the risk of the left turner. I position myself so that if the car in front of me has to slam on brakes because of a left turner, I can swerve to come up beside him if necessary.

You're right, I use lane splitting, filtering and sharing interchangeably because they are basically the same thing, passing another vehicle in their lane.
You are also right about following another vehicle through area's with cross traffic, I call it having an "escort". The whole point of filtering is to be the first one through the intersection and not have an "escort".

I'm not fooling myself at all, like I said, I'd use it for safety purposes. To put myself in SAFE positions in traffic. If it wasn't safe, or put me in dangerous positions I wouldn't do it. You are operating on the common misconception that it's ONLY used for "convenience" at the risk of putting yourself in danger. While SOME would use it for the purposes you are talking about, that's not what I was talking about. I definitely wouldn't use it to speed off from traffic the split second the light turned green like the guy in this video.

When done safely I don't think it's any less dangerous than riding a motorcycle in any other situation. When lane splitting at 50 when traffic is moving 30 or when splitting at 80 and traffic is moving at 60, that's a different story. Thankfully most Californian's are pretty nice and many are used to lane splitting. It's pretty uncommon for people do intentional things to injure us out here. Most of the time, for me anyhow, people see me coming (because I'm not screaming through traffic) and give me some extra room. As much as possible I give them a little wave of thanks. I figure it helps give us motorcyclists a better name. Just my $0.02.
