That extra stuff ahead of the frame steering-stem looks like a possible weak point in the rough stuff, when it gets 'tight'.

seen one similar

Ohlins has sold kits to fit conventional steering stems for several years... saw a demo of one in Edmonton in 2008, it was hydrostatic with a pump that drove off the front sprocket.
