Religious exemptions on helmet use

The province of Alberta is the most recent province to recently pass religious exemptions on the mandatory use of helmets on motorcycles, scooters and bicycles. Manitoba and British Columbia already have laws like this.

Interestingly none of the Sikhs I've asked about this are interested in riding a motorcycle without a helmet although I'm sure a Sikh Hog Chapter will spring up someplace. Most have just expressed interest in riding bicycles and some do now in violation of the law.

Perhaps we need to update this law again to get rid of the minimum DOT standard and replace it with ECE or Snell which might have a much more significant and measurable effect on lowering health care costs.

I find it strange that in Canada, discrimination based on religion is not permitted. Yet here we are doing exactly that.

In Canada, and in particular the western provinces, Sikhs and lapsed Sikhs make up a disproportionate number of comedians and politicians (hence the many turban laws around things like including turbans in RCMP, Police and Military uniforms and now helmet law exceptions). I believe there is an undocumented link between those professions we see in all world politics.

Sounds more like some squids are going to use this as a loophole to helmet laws.

Ironically India does have helmet laws, with no religious exemptions. Sikhs that ride there either take off the turban to ride, or have a turban that goes on over the helmet (usually a half helmet).

Liberals will always abandon logic, equality and safety to support minority "religious practices".

In the US it is normally conservatives who oppose helmet laws claiming it infringes on their "freedom", and in states with no helmet law the vast majority ride without one (because apparently you can't be one of the kool kids on your Harley if you wear a helmet). In the Alberta case this "minority religion" is probably some biker "church" that wanted a loophole from helmet laws.

Maybe they can soak the diaper in something to make hard and get to DOT certified.

Maybe in your state, but I work on the Gulf Coast of Florida a łot and see more deleted than not.

In my travels around this country I see more in helmets than not. Where I see no helmets is in town where the riders are in scooter mode putting around on 25 mph roads.

I like Sikhism. For one thing they have been at war with Islamists for hundreds of years, and they brought about the idea of private land ownership to everyday people in India and the entire region long before it was popular in Europe and the British colony known as America. They believe in one god who is the same god everyone believes in, helped the British empire survive both WWI and WWII, and they are good with having long hair and beards as it represent the natural beauty God bestowed on all of us. They are good with all other religions except Islam which was tried to be forced on them in the 1600's. To have respect for all people, and all have the same surnames, men being Singh and women being Kaur. These mean lion and princess. Has anyone ever met a Sikh who was not humble and respectful. Take that last question back. If they have been in the US very long, they may have been Americanized; or worse yet, Californicated. Don't shoot me Joe, just trying to be funny.

Here's a pic, and the story behind the FIRST (I believe...) Sikh to become a Mountie:

"Insp. Baltej Singh Dhillon is now a 27-year veteran of the RCMP. But when he applied to join the RCMP in 1988, he had to fight for his right to wear a beard and turban. (Canada: The Story of Us)"

A fairly common 'epithet' for Canada - Canuckistan!

If they want to, so be it. That is, as long as their insurance jumps up to go along with the increased risk of injury. I don't object to people doing stupid stuff as long as THEY pay the price for it. I dislike subsidizing stupid people's behaviour.

I also like Sikhs as they always appear calm and respectful to others.

They used to rule Pakistan as a multicultural nation. Then the British empire arrived. When the Brits left in 1906 the first elections saw a Hindu/Sikh parliament. Indian Muslims migrated into Pakistan and 50 years later in 1956 it was declared an Islamic Republic.
