Friend hit by drunk driver

Back on May 5th my friend Mike was hit almost head-on by a drunk driver. He was on a 3 week old chopper, his first time out riding it. Luckily he survived the crash, but has been in the hospital ever since, still has a few more weeks to go before he gets moved to rehab.

The list (not complete) of his surgeries/injuries:

For those of you following this episode in Mike's like he wanted you to know the following. Here is a list of injuries he is recovering from: An aortic dissection for which he had heart surgery, an open pelvic fracture for whihc he had the largest open reduction internal fixation the Sweedish doctors have ever performed, a bladder injury, a severe scalp laceration (see photo), issues with the tracheotomy which he needed, cervical fusion of C5 through T2, left rib fractures, left humeral fracture, right radius fracture, and a fracture of his big toe. Mike is making great strides and should be out of the ICU in a week or 2 and heding to a rehab hospital. Mike is racing up and down the halls in his wheelchair so they are ready to get rid of him!
Mike has lost 40 pounds and is working to put it back on.

If anyone is interested and would as a fellow rider would like to help him out, first you can "friend" his FB page, Friends of Mike Arko, secondly, the family is asking for donations to help as well. They did a silent auction back in June that raised $4,500, that helps with his basic expenses. Right now his medical bills top $1.5 mil and growing. The family is asking for donations to help him out with the other stuff, he was a small business owner and plans to get back to it and back riding.

One thing about this, it has really made me stop and think, especially the costs of an accident like this. Seriously going to look into some type of umbrella catastrophic insurance.

an update to this, he was moved today to a rehab facility, expects to be there another couple of months. However, he also has a couple more surgeries planned. Turns out one of the screws holding his pelvis together is very close to his spine and as a result causing an issue with his nerves, also another screw int he same area is partially coming loose. He may also need to some micro-surgery on other nerves in the near future.

I also learned that the person that hit him was a 21 yr old, stoned out of gourd on pot, also carrying pot in his car to a MMJ facility, when he swerved for no apparent reason.

Hope your friend gets through this and has some insurance to take care of him.

This stuff won't stop until there are some much harsher penalties for DUI.

Another update, he has been battling a MRSA infection for the last week, has finally overcome that. Another 24 hrs in rehab then they are letting him go home. Will still have rehab 4 days per week, 2 days in-home, 2 days at a facility, but at least he is going home.

He has no health insurance to speak of, he was a self employed (owned a couple of small businesses) and had spent all his money to repurchase a landscaping business he sold a couple of years back that was failing and working to rebuild the name/trust in the business.
