Cross border shipments are even worse with the main courier companies. They charge $20-$30 per shipment, to the package receiver, not the sender, for hidden "customs brokerage" fees if there is an international border being crossed. USPS/Canada Post do not charge extra.
As far as I can tell, "customs brokerage" fees mean they act as a 3rd party, to collect sales tax owed to the government on items purchased outside the country. So in effect I am paying the courier company an extra $20-$30 for the privilege of collecting sales tax on the declared value of the item, from me.
