POTUS security

If anyone is trying to knock off the President of the United States I think they are in for a huge challenge. Yesterday, with Obama's visit to Ottawa, (capital of Canada for you Americans, I know you thought it was Toronto ) I was blown away by the sheer scale of the security precautions put in place around him, although with the target the American President carries and the threat of ISIL I find it understandable.

Living in a national capital has a few unique traffic challenges like being being watchful around cars that have red diplomatic plates in traffic. I would assume some embassy staffers from third world countries are just not used to driving where there are rules of the road. Yesterday however with Obama's visit and the resulting security precautions it put a whole new spin on traffic. They shut down a main highway to the airport, the main traffic artery through the city, bridges, blocked canals and rivers, and main streets in the downtown core so he could travel safely by. Many downtown streets remained cordoned off the entire day. This in turn caused total and complete traffic grid lock which sucks when you are on a bike.

With hundreds of police devoted to sweeping buildings, sewers, tunnels and bridges along the route and keeping traffic and people far, far, away, as well as his own huge secret service security detail accompanying him, I would assume anyone trying to get close enough to fire an RPG, or detonate a bomb, is going to have an impossible challenge wherever he may travel. The level of security precautions in place for just one visiting VIP was truly staggering and must have run into the tens of millions of dollars for just the one day. In contrast other visiting dignitaries, even when they are heads of state, never generate road closures or these kind of security precautions.

Dropping a friend off at the airport yesterday morning, well before Obama's arrival, I noticed several large military looking helicopters parked in a cordoned off area. They were painted flat black with no markings. Just curious if anyone knows the purpose of these, assumed they were US secret service.

I lived/worked in Ottawa when Bill Clinton came for a visit, many years ago. The security form the airport to downtown was crazy. I'm sure the security posture has gotten MUCH bigger since then.

Always trust your cape.

Oh yes, he's pushed for gun bans so many times...like never. But I must give you credit for an extraordinary imagination...or at least regurgitating talk radio well.

He, AND Hillary have pushed for bans on Assault weapons, Which the AR-15 is not. So in effect, yes I am 100% correct in the fact they want to ban the gun that most of the secret service has quick and easy access too to protect them.

On Monday, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett will host a mass conference call for the general public “about the need to renew the assault weapons ban and the different gun safety measures the Senate is set to vote on in the coming week.”
Story Continued Below

Vice President Joe Biden announced the call in a response to a petition on the White House’s “We the People” platform on Friday. The request for a ban on the AR-15 assault-style rifle was posted on Sunday, in the immediate aftermath of the Orlando shooting in which were 49 people were killed, and already had nearly 200,000 signatures by Friday.
“The president and I agree with you,” Biden wrote. “Assault weapons and high-capacity magazines should be banned from civilian ownership.”

"The United States Secret Service (USSS) has released a Special Bidding Notice on the U.S. Government’s Federal Business Opportunities (FedBizOpp) website for a new service rifle. This bid request is for AR-15 rifles that can upgrade the Federal Agency responsible for protecting the President, and Vice President, as well as investigating counterfeiting crimes against U.S. currency or securities.

The USSS website states the Agency employes nearly 4500 armed members. This includes 3200 Special Agents, and another 1300 Uniformed Division officers. This does not include another 2000 technicians and specialists employed by the Secret Service to handle more technical matters of investigations."

So after almost 8 years and numerous mass slaughters he finally broke down and allowed Joe Biden to have a call based on their "We the People" website petition, just like any other petition that received the necessary online support. Wow, how insanely tyrannical!
In any event, re-enacting that law that doesn't ban anything, but rather makes continued sales of new guns somewhat more challenging.
You know what other bleeding heart liberal supported that law? Does the holy Saint Raygun (peace be with him) stir any memories?

"No less important was Mr. Reagan’s endorsement in 1994 of the assault weapons ban that was a major attempt to deal with efforts by domestic arms makers to sell adapted weapons of war to civilian buyers in the name of sportsmanship. “We can dry up the supply of these guns, making them less accessible to criminals,” Mr. Reagan in a joint letter to Congress with former presidents Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford."

A real sportsman only needs one maybe two rounds to do the job. He makes sure he has a clean shot and the targeted animal will not suffer before he shoots.

When someone has to have a weapon like these multi round watered down military ones my question is just WHO are YOU planning to declare war on?

BUT I guess the "Hunters" that do their shooting in malls, schools, bars and churches need more rounds upfront as they have more targets.

Really what the heck do you need 30 rounds in a gun for if not to kill people? Might as well let folks buy landmines and cluster bombs while we at it, they'd be good for the pesty little gofers digging in the lawn and if a few kids get hurt...well they should have stayed of my lawn.

Even the M1 Garand, the rifle America went to war with only had a 8 round clip so why does anyone need a 30+ round clip to hunt with. Lets face it these weapons were designed for only one thing to kill people and then watered down just enough to let the arms manufacturers legally sell them.

I have no problem with the 2nd amendment and have owned more than one gun myself but there comes a point where you have to look at what a gun is for and say "Maybe they shouldn't be selling that one to all the crazies out there"

Or was that look THEN leap?

The 2nd amendment wasn't about "duck rifles".
Come to the neighborhood where I work (Chicago south side) and tell me how many rounds I may have for personal defense.
