I come in peace

hey guys

In 2003 I was riding an '85 GS250 that my girlfriend affectionately called "my scooter" (why did I marry her?). That year Suzuki redesigned the SV650 with a cast aluminum frame and I though I found the perfect bike but at 6' I felt I needed something taller. Suzuki introduce the DL650 and all of my dreams came true but when your broke all you can do is dream.

When I finally had some scratch I sold the GS and bought a used GSF1200 and loved the sport touring ergos with risers. Years later I dabbled in the cruiser world and truly regretted it. during those years Kawi introduced the versys but I couldn't get past that ugly mug (don't delete my account yet) so I continued my search for the perfect sport tourer. I tried to cheat on my shadow 1100 with the redesigned DLs (650 and 1000) and even sat on a gen II V but just wasn't fully convinced so I moved on and stumbled across triumphs tiger 800. I love everything about them except for the price. Used 800's are hard to come by and I almost pulled the trigger on a 2013 collecting dust until I read about the improvements Kawi made on the Gen III versys.

I scooted up to my local bike shop and test rode Hondas CB500x and found it a bit cramped. I took the 2015 650 out for a spin was very impressed- wind protection was fantastic, the ergonomics were above average (not perfect like the tiger 800) but the seat was a ball buster and it was candy lime green!! (ok, delete me now).

Overall I was impressed with the new front end, windshield, stretched foot pegs, and rubber mounting so I put money down for a white 650 LT.

One month later I'm at 550 mi and all the scary 5K vibes are gone and I'm loving it. The gas mileage is the great, the power is linear, the handing is tight and the brakes (new to ABS) are more than adequate.

Looking forward to many years of enjoyment out of my V, especially since my wife said I can't have another bike until I reach the 1yr/1K mark (e.g. 8 years).

Cheers

Thanks stoley. I noted your comment on the seat. I felt the same initially but it really doesn't bother me anymore. Not sure if it's my habit of using my legs to control forward movement by hugging the tank at the knees (Lee Parks recommendation) or the addition of Rox risers (more on them later) to keep me further back on the seat. In fact, that's one thing I love about a sport tourer- you can scoot to the rear of the seat to open up the knee angle or move forward and lean over the tank to give my low back a break. The ergos on my shadow wouldn't allow it.

Welcome to the Versys. I purchased mine as my first bike in '08. I still ride it regularly - though this morning riding in at 37F was a bit cool.

I am having a great time on the Versys.

Welcome sir, great intro & it's nice to have someone who can string a few words together as well as add a little humour! (correct spelling!)

Thanks my2wheels did you make it to BBBBQ last month? I had a beer at the Brew Haus on Dickson St then went over to the main stage to hear a few bands for the night. Sadly I didn't get to ride while I was there. The east route to Eureka Springs is beautiful as is the trip down the Pig Trail.

I see only now that you are from St. Louis. I get to travel there often. I would be interested in knowing where you like to eat. Maybe next time I am out there, we could meet and talk about Versys'ing.

I think you might have missed my "hometowns" under my avatar. Either Kelowna, BC or Florence, AZ, depending on time of year.

Eddie,

I guess I mis-typed. I meant my response for the OP. It was not until you said "from out W" that I bothered to look at the location listed for the OP. Since that is what made me look, that was what I quoted.

I know about you... Canada, (retired?) pilot, rides to the Arctic Circle and beyond, Arizona in the winters, uses Thermo Bobs (when they can be installed). If you know of a good place to eat in Kansas City, then please tell me. My crew just usually ends up a Jack Stacks or the former Oklahoma Joe's. I have no idea where Florence is, but I may pass through on my way from home to Southern California this winter - unless El Nino makes the roads impassable.

Mursili there are plenty of places in St Louis to dine. The BBQ staples are Bogarts and Pappy's. Watch enough TV and you'll hear about Sweetie Pies. I mostly eat at home so I can spend my money on more important things like bills, daycare, and cheap beer.

Hey Joe, same here except the days of daycare payments are long gone!
I didn't go to the BBB&B because it's infested with men wearing chaps, which to a Brit is rather gay & reminds me of Breakback Mountain!!
If your ever down here give me a PM & we'll meet up & l'll show you some even better roads than the touristy area of Eureka Springs.
