Prospective Owner Down Under

G'day!

Was so close to buying a V-Strom 650 this week, then stumbled across the Versys (dunno how I missed it!). Took one for e test ride today and was very impressed Will probably make a decision tomorrow, after some advice in here.

Thanks - I need to wait the 48 hours to post, but in the meantime, can you tell me the service schedule for a 2015 model?

I took the maintenance schedule from the 2015 service manual and put it into a spreadsheet. Sorry it's all listed in miles instead of kms: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Thanks.

I feared it was a 3,800mi (6,000km) schedule

I plan to use it as a commuter to do 380 miles per week, which would mean 5 services a year, compared to the V-Strom which has a 7,600 mile schedule.

Decisions, decisions...

I chose the V over the Strom and don't regret it for a nano-second. But make sure it's the special Down Under version so stuff doesn't fall off. You being upside down and all.

The August copy of MOTORCYCLIST magazine compared the '15 V650LT and the V-Strom 650, and found the V was WAY better. BTW - I don't see how you got a 6,000 km schedule.... MY manuals say oil & filter each 12,000 kms (7.6 K miles), altho' I do it each 8,000 km (5K mi) w' Mobil1 15w-50....

Also - look for a PM from me.

Ed

Thanks Ed. The reply from scutrbrau shows 3,800 miles (6,000km) service schedule.

The dealer has confirmed it's definitely a 6,000km service schedule

They are ripping you off in my opinion, 12 k is service for oil/filter, 12k is also the frequency they say to change iridium plugs which is really over the top in my opinion.

I don't see how you can say that the spreadsheet from scutrbrau indicates a 6000km service interval. I looked at it and it was clearly a 12,000km interval - unless you value inspecting your emissions filter way too often.

Those are usually in major/minor maintenance intervals. Skip the minors: change oil, air in tires, lol. In reality after your first major, it's probably closer to every 10k miles. This bike has a midrange cam that will set your eyeballs in the back of your head and it's dependable as hell. It's like a $5K option for free - a gift from Kawasaki!

Those were the two bikes I looked at too, but no one is going to beat Kawasaki on value especially on this bike. This site will help you get going with the most information on this bike in the world. Whatever you choose, be safe; and when you get buzzed by a Versys 650 (a supermoto tourer), remember you've got better offroad capability on the Suzuki (a dual purpose bike) - and you are paying a lot more for it your whole ownership with Suzuki's.

Ryan - as I already said, BOTH my 2015 manuals (SERVICE and OWNERS) say 12,000 kms for the oil, after the initial at 1,000.

Along with the midrange cam performance, DON'T forget the vertical twin engine handling on a supermoto chassis. It really can't be beat.

Work your best deal before you test drive it, and have a cheap alternative bike (Suzuki) and used (Versys 650) bike advertisements in your pocket for deal making to show you've done your homework. If you go in excited, they know they will have you after a test drive. Keep it together and try to save a few thousand dollars at the dealer: it's hard for anyone to do at oem dealers.

Good luck and we have a lot of Australian owners here to help you locally and MAYBE a better dealer - ???
