New member - Old rider

I'm a 72-year old former Versys rider. My '08 650 was one of the most fun bikes I ever owned. But I traded it for a Honda NT700VA for more comfort.

I rode the Versys from norther WI down the Mississippi to about Memphis and eastward to TN, SC, NC, KY, WV, OH, and homeward. I also had it out west a time or two and tired taking it up to a high mountain campground in ID where I had worked in the late 60's. But the road got too rough and I only made it 65 out of the 70 miles of gravel and rocks. If I had had off-road tires with less air pressure I might have made it, but I didn't want to wreck 70 miles from the nearest town so I turned around.

Now one of my riding buddies is on a Versys 650 and I signed on here just to make sure he is telling the truth (ha-ha).

Forgot to mention that I'm also a former Concours (C10) rider. And my son rides a C14. So I'm still related to the Kawi Family.

I also have the distinction of blowing up one of the bullet-proof Concours engines. A connecting rod came through the engine case after hydrolocking the engine. It was the result of a failed fuel valve coupled with a leaky float valve which allowed gas to fill a cylinder which bent the con-rod upon starting. (raw gas does not compress) So I bought an engine out of a newer wrecked bike with less miles on it and installed it. It then ran better than when it was new.

Welcome, and thanks. I'm not the old guy any longer - I'm a "mere" 70.

Just remember - you are being watched. And if you don't behave I'll tell your wife that you have ordered a new R1200RT. It won't have to be true for her to believe it.

That looks like it would "get er done".
I'm actually thinking about a dirt bike (about a 250), but I need to ride my mountain bike to stay in the best shape I can for an old fart.

Raised front fender (1.75") to fit a 130/80 tire (altho' THAT is a 120/70 TKC80 in the pic), and Walmart ATF in the forks; SW-Motech crash bars and 'skid-plate'; Zeta handguards; front master-cylinder from an '09 for MUCH better brakes, AND SS brake-lines, BOTH ends; Yamaha R1 shock w/ 13.8 kg/mm Eibach spring ( I weigh about 175# w/out gear); and rear 150/70 tire (that is a Shinko BIG BLOCK).

USUALLY it wears Metzler Tourance rubber, 130/80 rear on the front, 150/70 rear on the rear, run at 36F and 42R, NEVER aired-down.

I THINK that's everything....

No offense intended, no offense taken.
By the way - "old" is a relative term meaning anyone older than me.

What pressures do you run in those tires off-road?

Fast Eddie,
I enjoyed your thread about riding to Inuvik etc. Your account and pictures were great. I rode some of the same roads 2 years ago when I went to AK via wester US, up the Icefields Parkway, and up to Hinton, and the Alaska Highway to Tok, down to Valdez, back north and over to Anchorage, Fairbanks, and on to the end of the road at Chena Hot Springs. Did not do the Haul Road because there is too much plastic on my bike for that. I was with Phil Tarman (another NT rider), who was doing his "Post Retirement Epic Ride to AK - the 4 corners - plus Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, and Labrador"

Your description of the construction zones differs from mine. We had lots of rain on the gravel (with calcium chloride) stretches which were 10 to 30 miles long. And the north end of the Cassiar was kind of rough then.

FIRST time I rode the Dempster (in '09 on my KLR) I figure it MUST have been pretty good, as I have no particular recollection of it.

FIRST time on the Cassiar was in '04 (on a Suzuki Bandit 1200S), and I remember the B12 being SO muddy you could NOT tell its color. I washed it in Vanderhoof, and the stall at the car-wash looked like someone had washed a pickup that'd been SUBMERGED in mud.

Good having you on the site, Jim.
