Greetings from Utah. New Versys 650LT owner.

Greetings all. New 2015 Versys 650 LT in the garage! This is my 3rd bike. First was a new '82 Kawasaki KZ550, which was the first thing I bought myself after college. It was an excellent bike at the time, inline 4 cyl. Very smooth and lots of torque. About 10 yrs later, after the kids were born, I sold it due to never riding. Then about 5 yrs ago I acquired an old '88 Yamaha Rt 66 250. It was fine for going a mile to get groceries, but didn't have the guts or weight for the highway or mountain roads.

Ergo the Versys! So far I've got about 60 miles on it.

The only complaint is lugging or roughness from about 2k rpm to about 3200 rpm.

Welcome. Solution to your roughness problem - don't lug the engine, it doesn't like it. Not trying to be a smart a$$ either - the engine really does like revs. Enjoy and ride safely.

Exact same bike here... Also in Utah! Welcome!

My lugging has smoothed out pretty well after about 600 miles.

Yeah, I'm just used to the old bike which had tons of torque (relatively speaking) at low rpm, but it didn't rev all that high. I'm learning to hear 4k rpm as normal loafing around.

Glad to hear the lugging improved. The dealer (South Valley Motorsports) said he thought it would. Mine seems to be improving a bit with about 100 miles on it.

I'm taking it up one of the canyons today to put some more miles on it. What a perfect day out there right now!

Congrats Fly-sig on the great choice for your bike. I also bought one just like yours a few weeks ago. However, I am still waiting for the bags and hand guards. Hopefully they'll come this week. I installed the OEM fog lights.
I am glad you are not bogging the engine anymore. Reminds me of my brother in law who in the 70's bought a Kawasaki 2 stroke triple and thought it was a dog until someone told him not to bog it.

I'm going to try the TPS adjustment to see if it helps. From all I've read on this site, the symptoms are consistent with running too lean. I live at 5000 ft elevation, which may be a complicating factor for the electronics and sensors. When the engine is cold it runs much better than when it is warmed up, indicating the roughness is due to lean mixture.

Will do. I plan on riding up Big Cottonwood and over the pass to Park City on Wednesday. Once the bike is warmed up I'll give it a tweak. From what I've read on this forum, the '15 engine control was programmed to a leaner mixture than previous years.

Wulff81, so far it seems like a substantial improvement in engine smoothness! I've only made one short run to the grocery store since the adjustment but it was much smoother in the 2k to 3k rpm band. Much like it is when cold and getting a richer mixture (do we call it "choke" any more with fuel injection?)

The adjustment is rather imprecise without a voltmeter, just eyeballing it. The paint stripe is on the screw and then onto the TPS. Loosening the screw moves the line on the screw, and then tightening it back up who knows if it is back exactly where it was before.

In any case, I made a tiny adjustment, aiming for about 1/2 the width of the paint line. There was no effect on the idle speed for the warm engine. We'll see tomorrow when it is cold again if the idle is where it should be or if it needs to be adjusted.

BTW, they're repaving the road up the Big Cottonwood canyon. Crap. I'm not riding over brand new blacktop.

G'day from down under, my first brand new motorcycle was a 1982 GPz550 awesome bike, perhaps not as much torque as the KZ but man did it fly when you wound it up. I loved that bike and would love to get another.



and my Versys which I reciently sold to my son.
