my mode button is not working, is this a common issue?

It's very common....almost universal.
There are several threads on this subject.
I used the pull off the cap & spray WD-40 method with success.

Never an issue with mine, but then again that is probably because I sprang for a 4 year extended warranty.

Extremely common, lots of threads about it here, and I finally dealt with it by never changing my settings. I have the odometer showing, and I attached an analog clock to the center of the dash.

I took it all apart (thought I was gonna rip the buttons off if I tried to pull them out) and sprayed some electrical contact cleaner on the button contacts.
Quite a pisser but it works like a charm! So I'd say its worth it.
