Perspective Versys Owner

Hey guys, I am looking at buying a Candy Blue New 2013 Kawi Versys for $5,900.00. Just looking for some input from you guys. I plan to add some hard bags ,larger windscreen, and bark busters. I want to use the bike for longer rides and commuting to and from work. I have had over a dozen motorcycles, but mostly supersports. I am getting to the point where I want comfort and long riding capability over speed and looks ( not that the versys is ugly by any means).

My only non super sports were the 2006 Suzuki SV1000s, 2014 Yamaha FZ-09, 2012 DR650SE, 1998 DR200S, and 2014 Honda Grom. I have sat on the Versys, V-Strom, and Tiger. Out of the three, I really, really like the Versys.

My big questions are:

How well does the stock fairings and windscreen protect you from wind while cruising on the highway.

I read the bike is a bit buzzy at highway speeds, is that true?

What kind of money I am looking at for adding color matching hard bags?

What kind of hp can the versus get up to with bolt ons?

Is $5900 a good deal for a new one?

Thanks guys I appreciate your time.

Here is some bike porn...my last three bikes:

Only you can say whether $5,900 is a good deal or not. My first one co$t $7,500 OTD, while my second (a left over '09 in Nov '10) cost $4,859, plus taxes to import it into Canada in Apr '11, so, AROUND $5,400 all in.

$5900 sounds like a good price and the only regret you would have would be not getting it.

Color matching bags and hardware would probably approach $1,000 but many have gotten the givi E21 bags for much less but I don't think they have color other than a silver trim option.

The wind protection isn't bad. My 08's screen is inverted and I can ride +highway speeds hours with no fatigue. If the stock screen doesn't cut the wind enough for you there are good options for a bit over $100.

Compared to your DR's the V isn't buzzy at all and you'd probably love it.

Some folks have done a full exhaust and fuel controller and been happy and mention the bike being smoother and pulling stronger....not arm ripping but they liked it. Maybe 10% or a bit more hp so it's a pretty high $/hp ratio.

Here's an old thread about exhaust/controller thoughts:

It does well - for a small fairing. You're gonna want a larger windscreen if for no other reason than the OEM windshield is very noisy.

I read the bike is a bit buzzy at highway speeds, is that true?

I don't find it "buzzy", but we're not comparing it to a flat-six in a Gold Wing, now are we?

What kind of money I am looking at for adding color matching hard bags?

Around $1200, - but there are so many other options out there. In my case, I added those large Tusk aluminum sidecases and the Happy Trails mounts for a total out of pocket of $400. AND they're top-loaders. I hate the clamshell side-loaders!

What kind of hp can the versus get up to with bolt ons?

I don't have a clue. Mine does well in the stock form, so I'm leaving it alone.

Yes.

Thanks guys I appreciate your time.

Thanks for the replies guys. I picked up the versys yesterday. Will post pics later today! Trailered it home and then it started raining, and it is still raining. So I have been sitting on the bike in the garage a lot, but it still has 0 miles on it

Congrats, I think that was a good deal!

I found that the stock windscreen didn't have very good wind protection on the highway. There are tons of aftermarket options to remedy that. I chose the MTS screen - the Xscreen version and that's working out well.

I did the Givi bags, top and side (V46 top V35 side), I got them in black.

I wasn't interested in adding more hp, I did install a slip-on, for looks and sound. Yeah, I know, haahaha.

I also came from riding only sportbikes, but was finding as I got *ahem* older, the riding position was no longer comfortable for long rides. (Most recently was a CBR929). The Versys was just what I was looking for...relatively inexpensive, lightweight, comfortable for all day rides, and still handles sporty enough to fill the sportbike "need".

Next I'll be putting some better tires on it and getting Hyperpro springs. I'm only 5'4" and have Speedy's lowering kit in. Hoping to remove it and instead lower 1" with the lowering Hyperpro springs.

Have fun!

Thanks HondaGal, Kballowe, and Tig for giving specifics on what bags and windscreens you guy are using. That is very helpful. I look forward to learning more and contributing more to this forum in the future! As promised here is the Versys in her Stall, with her stable mates, at the gas station(not getting gas, was following a friend who had to stop for fuel), and in the showroom before i brought her home.

on the topic of bags, i had the givi 35L side bags, and they just didn't work well for me. sold them and replaced with dryspec setup from twisted throttle and love it.

http://www.twistedthrottle.com/drysp...ray-and-orange

the duffle has a riggid liner in it to hold shape even with nothing in it so i leave it strapped to the rear seat as a trunk for my daily commute. lots of rain, never a drop inside.

For anyone looking, here is a 2014 demo unit with 100 miles or less for $4,700 in Wisc. You could have it shipped and still be around $5,000. These guys (this shop) are not flakes either, good guys.

Concerning bolt on horses.... why?

It's got plenty of snot for what it was intended for. Even though the power band from it's Ninja roots was moved to a more practical range, it has rather great capability if you need or want to pass something at the upper end of "over the speed limit", and you will end up rather quickly at "unpublished speeds" that will result in fun, and tickets.

Buzzy?

It's like a Gold Wing compared to a KLR.
and it's an injected twin with 6 speeds.

It's a parallel twin, some of that "feel" is part of that motor design, just means it's doing what it was intended to do. If you want smooth, consider a vStrom, it's more money but an exceptional bike you would never regret.

Anyway, welcome and it will be good to hear and SEE what you end up with man.

I know you will make an informed decision with the data from the gang here-- a wealth of fellow rider's combined years of riding, free tech ability and experience.

Here's my '09 w/ aluminum bags (that co$t $430 in Canada, PLUS about $300 for GiVi racks, PLUS another $75 for mounting hardware)...

that I'm duplicating down here in AZ (even brought two more "moose" decals), at a cost of $220 for the bags, $180 for the GiVi stuff, so It SHOULD come in at LESS than I paid JUST for the panniers up North....

Yeah I know I am taking a hit on HP coming from supersports my 636 made 130 stock lol, but I think it is going to work out great. I wanted more comfort for commuting and for the longer rides, so the versys is perfect for me. I am at the point where I can just enjoy riding the a bike, without having to accelerate like a bat out of hell. But I plan to do function mods first, that is windscreen, bags, gps mount, and bark busters. Then down the road after a few thousand miles, if I feel the bike could benefit from an exhaust and/ or tune, then I will pursue that. Thanks for the welcome everyone.

Thanks Kohburn for the info, I may end up with soft bags if they will keep there shape.

Fasteddie, I love the green, so sexy. I need to get some blue rim tape. It looks great!

Obi Welcome to the group.
I have the Kappa 35 litter bags (givi knock offs). But I love having them on. I have made LED running lights on them so I light up at night. At first I thought they were too big. Now I keep wet weather gear in them and have no problems for quick grocery store stops on way home. Since I don't live in that one state that allows lane splitting, I will keep them.

Eddie,

I'm not sure your rear lights are big enough. On second thought I imagine they are. I suspect anyone following closely would need nuclear blast glasses - the kind used in the late 1940s and early 1950s when nuclear explosions were frequent and exciting diversions.

I do love the moose decals! I need a pair for my Maine bike; where did you get them?
