New Member from Colombia, South America!

Hello all!

Just registered, and a long-time rider here! Have owned 11 bikes, ranging from sport to cruiser to now a (tiny) 200cc SuperMotard! I am an (American) Science and Biology teacher here in Medellin, Colombia and after months of research have finally found the perfect bike: the Versys! I'll have to post up some pictures later, but the mountain riding down here is nothing short of incredible. Problem is, any good bike bought here is almost double the price! USD equivalent of purchasing a Versys with Colombian Pesos? $13,000.00!!!!!! Yup, you read that correctly!

Anyway, am going to start looking for a patient and helpful private seller to hand over my new baby when I come back to the US to visit in December, and then ship her down with me! I'm super-excited, and hope to make many friends as this forum grows! Any current owners who will be selling, references of some good bikes for sale or just good 'ole information for a born-and-bred Texas boy lost in the jungles of South America would be appreciated! haha

If bikes are that expensive down there, a new one here sure is a good deal!

One thing I found while looking for used Vstroms, these kind of bikes are not on the leading edge of technology. So, buyers don't sell them after two years to buy the latest, greatest thing. Used bikes are harder to come by and the prices tend to favor sellers.

That's good for us who already have our Versys!

Welcome!

Bear - Thanks!

Hack - I see you are in Asheville! I have family in Lake Lure, do you have any good recommendations for local Kawasaki shops in the area in case I buy one there?

As for ups/downs, one up to buying it here is you don't have to deal with all the paperwork required to export. And th reason the price is so high here is that Congress has not passed to Free Trade pact with Colombia, so the tariffs are ridiculously high! If I bought one for export from the US, I would pay a total of 51% takes on the value of the bike just to get it in, then allllllll the other fees to register, title and get insurance. Comes out to about $11k if you do it on your own. The other option is to buy and title it in the US, then take it into Colombia on a temporary permit which lasts for 3 months, and ever other time you renew you have to leave the country (road trip to Venezuela or Ecuador) which can be inconvenient but a GREAT ride!

BTW...another benefit...did you know the Versys comes in 5 colors here???? Blue, Red, Black, Silver and Burt Orange!

Well BigTex, I moved here about a three weeks ago, and I bought at a shop in Johnson City, TN; quite a haul from Lake Lure/Fairview. The road from Asheville to Lake Lure is AWESOME!

I'd have mine in Burnt Orange if I had those choices.

Cool...well nice to meet you! Spoke with a guy for an hour today from Asheville Kawasaki and I'm going to put down some money to get the first 2009 that rolls through his door in October/November, go pick it up over the Holidays, then ship it down with me!

I was thinking about taking some picks of all the colors lined up and posting it here - maybe this weekend!
