I had a 2002 BMW 1150 RT before getting the KLR 3 yrs ago. I had so much fun riding the KLR, I only road the BMW 2 or 3 times that first year of KLR ownership & then sold it the following summer. The KLR is now pretty close to perfect after lot's of $$. I say pretty close, because it is still lacking 30-40 hp & a 6th gear. I would be one of the first in line if Kawasaki put the Versys motor in a real dual sport similar to the KLR.
I keep looking for just the right bike that can be all & do all. I have test ridden just about everything out there except the new 1000 Vstrom, the 1190 KTM ADV R & the KTM 690 Enduro R. Triumph 800's, Bmw 800 & new wc 1200, Guzzi Stelvio, Ducuti Multistrada, The Yam super 10. They all have some nice features but not all in one package overall. I am needing/wanting something I can ride everyday as well as ride to the trails & back & pick up by myself. I might wind up keeping the KLR & just add another bike like the Versys. I've yet to ride one. It was 17 degs & snowing this morning when I went by the dealer.
The V appears to be easier to work on than the wee strom, especially for valve adjst's.
There are some screaming deals on left overs 12's & 13's right now compared to the 14's with ABS. Even though I love ABS, I'm not sure it is worth the $1300-$1500 difference between the years. That would almost buy all of the farkles I would want.
