Newbie in Denver

Hi all, I'm Chris in Denver. I am considering buying a 2009 Versys to be used for a trip with my son (18) through Central and South America.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome, my 08 versys has side panniers and a top box which is great for long trips, good to have lockable box's for security, good for wet weather and easy to remove from bike at end of a days ride.

I understand the farkle needed. I'm just looking for some input concerning maintenance issues/parts availability, ease of maintenance/repairs and overall performance and rideability issues I might need to consider when choosing the V.

From my own experience and also from around the world the versys is a cheap to maintain low maintenance bike, very reliable engine, have not heard of one blowing up. For a big trip like yours it would pay to have a good look at state of chain and sprockets before starting the trip. Have heard of a couple of issues around the world with a rectifier/regulator failure which cooked alternator. A lot of the riders on this forum have some big miles on their bikes and have had no major issues.

Just a tip for the forum, once you have done your 48hrs to make sure your not a spammer lol then re post your original question in the general section for example as maybe not everyone reads the member intro section, there is a lot of experience here on the forum to answer most questions. Did a 4000km or in your terms 2500mile week away trip in January with no issues.

Basically, my experience (on two V's, an '08 in AZ - 46,000 miles, and an '09 in BC - 40,000 kms) is that they are 'bulletproof'.
