Greetings from Colorado!

Hello, everybody. I am a longtime bicyclist but a new motorcyclist residing in beautiful Colorado (between my Denver and Boulder offices). Saw all the bikers looking like they were having fun and wanted to give it a try, so I took a MSF course and caught the bug. Got a killer deal on a brand new 2011 Versys about a month ago and I'm having big fun. The Versys is perfect for my needs-- weekend canyon climbing up the twisties, commuting, and occasional backroads adventure. Farkle/mods so far include a Givi topbox that works great for commuting and securing a helmet when I arrive, mirror extenders, a peg lowering kit I need to install, a givi engine guard I will install before hitting any gravel/dirt roads, and a larger Givi windscreen that is on its way. Just cleared the 500 mile break-in period. So far so good!

Forgot to mention that I also have an Air Hawk seat pad which does a great job of making the seat really comfortable, smoothing out the vibrations and giving me just a little extra legroom. Highly recommended!

Welcome

Before you get a bit excited about backroad adventures. Get some significant mileage on the most traveled roads. The versys is a very forgiving ride. However it has enough power and weight to get you in trouble very quickly. I'm also in CO and put a good 20K before trading up to a tiger explorer. Not that I disliked or fault the versys. It is an awesome ride. Its that it did not fit my riding style and goals anymore. Also keep in mind that the versys is a street bike. It is not intended for any significant off road use. If you plan to leave the pavement get a set of tires better fit for that. I did plenty of dirt roads and got good results from the pirelli svorpion syncs. Pretty good on pavement, excellent on wet roads, and much better on dirt than most street tires. Most important, they come in the right size and speed rating.

Ride safe

Thanks Boricua. Great advice. I have been reading this and other sites and have become keenly aware of both my limitations and the Versys' limitations offroad so I am going to follow your adviice and keep it on the pavement the vast majority of the time. When I do find a good dirt or gravel road to explore/get to my destination, I plan to take it slow. I have heard several folks recommend the Scorpion tires for more versatility and that's what I plan to go with once I wear out the stock tires. Thanks again.
