Pre-newb in So Cal

How can you be a pre-newb? I dont even have my M class license yet. That is this weekend, I take the class. Then I will be looking for an '08, I love the red.

At age 49 I have been mountain biking and riding and building electric bikes and mopeds capable of 40+ mph for years, and I have had a manual tranny in may 90% of my cars, including pricey BMWs, so I am thinking the motorcycle curve will not be steep. Where I work we have a parking structure where a big section of the first floor is set aside for motorcycles, and wow, what a great collection of bikes. After walking by them for months and thinking about it I finally got bit. I have a family full of Harley riders, they are all clueless about bikes like the Versys, but that is OK, we have lots to talk about.

I am contemplating a Versys if I can be convinced it can do easy fire road riding with some light knobs like the Corsa MT 60s. This forum looks like a great resource!

Welcome to the show! Though I have no off road experience with the Versys, there are quite a few who have. Seems like the Versys can handle what you're looking for with ease, properly equipped. So spend a few days with us & look around a bit. I would bet you'll find a lot of answers to help you make your choice, Versys or not...

Versys is OK for fire/logging roads. But with alloy rims (not spoked) you can't hack significant potholes-like you could say with a KLR.

The exhaust pipes with no stone guard are vulnerable.

Having said that, I've done 100's of miles on mild unpaved roads with no issues.

If you want to do more than that, have a look at the KLR, not as smooth as the Versys, but it will tackle almost any off-road challenge including single track and boulders.
