Chicagoland old timer

Greetings.
I figured I'd never get off BSAs right up until- oops- they crashed and burned.
In June, 1977, I finally slinked into Illinois Kawasaki (long departed) in Des Plaines, Illinois and asked to see a KZ750 twin.
The sales manager, Doug Meyers, and yes, that Doug Meyers that was a part of Muzzy's for many, many years, told me to forget that thing and insisted I take a KZ650 Four for a test ride.
I'd never actually heard of a test ride before. It took some doing to get my bearings while they photocopied my license and then off I went. A half-hour later, I walked back in with my wallet in my hand and peeling out C-notes.
$1765.00 out the door. That was different money.
80,000 miles and NO repairs later, I sold it for a KZ1000J. Then a Concours 1000. Then a GPZ1100E... that one went 106K with, again, NO repairs ever. Lotsa tires and oil, though.
Nowadays the ZRX has a 2018 Versys 650LT for company, the Missus' fourth bike in her short career as a new-ish rider. Her everyday one though has gotten to be an SV650S and the V650 goes for "touring".
The Wings are in the past and an FJR holds down the big-touring-bike role for me.
But that Versys intrigues this old guy...

Wow, haven’t heard the name Illinois Kawasaki for many years! Really liked the people that worked there – they were always very helpful. Most of them were true motorcycle enthusiasts! Used to get parts for my ’75 H2 and my brother for his KZ1000 and later KZ650. Small world! Thanks for the flashback.

FWIW - whenever an 'older' guy asks me about the Versys, I ask if he remembers the '60s era Triumph and BSA 650s. Then I add (when he says YES), that the Versys is what the Triumph and BSA 650s of that time would have morphed into if both companies hadn't gone bankrupt - DOHCs, disc brakes, fuel injected, etc, etc.

I ALMOST feel guilty after a ride when I do not need to tighten things or replace stuff that vibrated off during the ride....

From one intrigued old timer to another, welcome aboard.

Bill you should be intrigued by the Versys and for good reason. It is one heck of a great little bike that can.

I have a 2015 that I bought used a couple of years ago. I have added round 22k miles on it. Gotta say it is the most fun street bike I have ever owned. I have had several liter bikes, a Connie 14, and a KTM 1190 Adventure, and a Yamaha FZ09 but the little 650 Versys is more fun to ride because it handles so well and is very comfortable to ride.

You keep riding that little Versys and your intrigue will grow into love. I would not be surprised if you and your wife will soon be arguing over who gets to ride the Versys.

Cheers and ride safe.

What model was that Velocette? Nice bike.

I had a Matchless G80CS back in my cave days.
