Getting ready to buy a Versys

Hello all,

I'm from Central PA and have spent most of my riding over the years on a KLR650 Dualsport. I've been eyeing the Versus for about 7 or 8 years and have finally decided to find a decent used model. I'm presently looking at 2011 to 2014 models, as they fall into my budget.

I like to ride the many dirt roads in my area, but don't plan to hit any trails like I did with the KLR. I think back to places I took that bike and shudder! I guess fear and common sense isn't as pronounced as it is as you get older.

I'm excited to get back on two wheels after about 5 years of having no bike. I also considered the Honda NC750 and 700, but after reading through user reviews and such, think that the Versys will be much more to my liking.

Quick question, is it better to buy a bike with more miles but lots of extras, such as Givi Luggage, or buy a year newer bike with 800 miles, but no extras? I'm really struggling to make a decision on this one.

I would rather buy a bike that gets used. Sitting around can/does create it's own set of problems, i.e. old rotten brake fluid, expired corrosive coolant, battery, bad gas in the tank and injection system(this can get real expensive), old rotten rubber seals and boots and those almost new looking tires that may be 8 years old and will require immediate replacement. A lot of times buying a hardly used bike is not really a good deal.

Yeah, if you want true ram air tuning, you better be willing to ram some air! (SteveinSunnyFlorida)

Hey,

Thanks for the insight. I had thought of the tires, but didn't consider the seals drying up.

I do like the extras with the other bike, so I might give a second look.

FWIW - I have 82,219 MILES on my '08, and I would NOT hesitate to take it to Alaska and back (it's in AZ). My '15 650LT has about 71,000 KMS, and I would NOT hesitate to take it to Alaska and back, where it's ALREADY been (it's in BC).

Agreed, have 62,600 miles on my '15, but I do ride it year round.

I sold a one liter Connie with 234k miles on it that still performed perfectly.
