Newbie Motorcycle Saga

It started when I was 16 (now 73) when I bought a used Vespa, early 50s model. Ran fine until I painted it-who knows?
Next was a 1962 BMW R 27, 250 single. While I was in college (Boston 64-69) I rode it around town and back and forth to CT, my home.
Unsatisfied with performance I sold the BMW and bought a used Norton Electra 400 (65?), their effort to compete with Japanese bikes; it was an unmitigated disaster, should have kept the BMW. Then about a 15 year drought while I got married and my wife gave birth to 2 great kids, now adults. Next was a 1975 BMW R 90S, I put about 50k miles on that including escorting my son to Iowa on 2 lane roads only while he continued to CA on his own riding a Kawasaki 500EX.
Wanting to do a "real" x-country trip so I purchased a used BMW K1200RS in CA, rode up and down CA a few times and then left for Maine with my son riding a Honda Trans Alp (he preferred the Kawasaki). Bought the R50/2, instead of an R 27 because I thought I needed more power due to weight gain; it's fun to ride locally. Finally sold the R90S to a guy in New Brunswick, Canada who has nicely restored it to original glory. An now what I think will be my final bike the 2017 Versys 650 I wanted a better riding position and more reliability. I think I got both. I forgot the Honda ST1100 (used) owned from 2006-2012 used to commute from MA to ME on weekends when I worked in the Boston area. I saw a bunch of them riding in CA and when I wanted another road bike the BMWs were too expensive; the used ST1100 rode well and was a good deal.
There you have it!!

Glad to be here

The answer is simple: I am glad to be here. I have found that a lot of information is available about specific products (mobile phones, digital cameras, smallish tractors, motorcycles) if one is able to ferret out the user group web sites. It not only provides a way to learn a lot about ones new stuff but also a place to post questions to many similar minded people at once. It is also a way to forecast potential problems or failures before they happen. I was lucky to find the MC with only 500 miles on the odo, loaded with about $2500 of useful aftermarket stuff for less than a reasonably discounted retail price. Not as good as some other deals I saw claimed on the Classified Forum and I wanted most of the stuff that would have cost me plenty.
There is always the risk of folks getting a little too single minded (ask me about BMWOA rallies) but it is pretty easy to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Welcome from Moosehead Lake, Maine. Similar story here - I'm now 74 and have been riding since around 1963. It all began with a Cushman Super Eagle all those years ago and it's been a grand journey since.

My assortment of machines has included: a Harley 750 flathead, Suzuki GS450, 850 Norton Commando Interstate, Kawasaki 250 cruiser, Suzuki GS750, Norton Commando 750 Production Racer, BMW R100CS Final Edition (limited edition of the last two valve airheads), Moto Guzzi V50 III, Suzuki T500J, Kymco Xciting 500, Suzuki S40 Boulevard, Honda CTX700, BMW K75S, Suzuki TU250X, BMW G310R, Can AM Spyder RT-L, Can Am Spyder RT Limited, and, of course, a Versys 650 - a 2008 Gen One in, what else, brilliant red. Don't tell anyone else but it's the fastest color. I may have overlooked one or two but at my age that's allowed.

If I had to select just one or two of the entire bunch it would be the Versys and something else. The Versys because I believe it's an almost perfect all around machine, The something else depends on where I am and what I intend to do - go touring, puddle around, ride the twisties, or just profile. Well OK, it's a little hard to profile at 74 but I can still live the dream, can't I? Especially with a dark face shield!
