First Bike

I'm a University Student in Utah. Just purchased my first bike about a month ago. I opted for a used 2016 Versys 650 LT. So far I'm loving it! Put about 1200 miles on it so far. Got it for the better gas mileage than my car on the commute to work and school, or at least that the excuse I tell myself. I also enjoy taking it up in the mountains to find some good dirt roads/trails.

What better reasons for buying a Versys than better fuel mileage and, oh yes, a lot more fun, especially in the mountains. Well done, Moradin.

Congrats.

You didn't say first street bike so I am assuming you had no prior motorcycle experience before this purchase.

If this is true, learn and grow in your motorcycling skills through reading and practice.

I recommend the "Proficient Motorcycling" series by David Hough, "Street Strategies" by David Hough, "Total Control" by Lee Parks. You might even find them in your library.

Remember that Skill is what keeps you on two wheels, Situational Awareness helps keep you out of harms way, and good gear helps when either of the first two fail.

One of the strategies I follow when riding is to always be asking "Why is that driver doing that?" If I see a driver slowing down, "Why is he slowing down?" Until I can answer that question I make no attempts to pass him. If a driver in the right lane is slowing down and is even signaling to turn into a parking lot, I ask "Can someone pull out of that parking lot while he is turning in?" If I can't see that it is clear I will also slow down until I know for sure that it is clear.

Riding is like playing chess. You need to know all the moves, and be planning several moves ahead.

Good luck and have fun out there.

Welcome aboard, Moradin! I'm a fellow Utahn, living in the SLC area. There is an infinity of great roads to ride in this state!
