Jeeze, this place will let anyone in! I promise to be on my best behavior at all times
Seriously, love this forum, been lurking for years and finally took the plunge and joined. Lots of really great info. Info from this forum has led to a number of after market purchases like seat, windshield, handlebar risers, kickstand “spreader” (bolt on piece at the bottom of the stand which prevents the side stand from sinking into a soft surface) and so on.
Current ride is a 2012 650 Versys (bumble bee) that was purchased new in 2014 and now has ~26K miles on it. Use it for commuting and short weekend rides. Most of the riding is light suburban/xurban/rural on secondary roads. Versys pluses are it’s a blast to ride, ~48mpg, like the way I sit “in” not on top of the bike, fast enough to be fun but not insanely powerful and fairly light. The minuses are comfort related, the stock seat forces me to “slide” down towards the tank and it feels like the rear suspension is giving me a kidney punch when going over rough roads (lots of bad roads in NE IL). To be fair if I were 35 years younger or in better shape, these issues probably wouldn't be as bad. Currently have a Sargent seat with added modifications to prevent sliding forward. The seat is much better than stock but still not right for me. I am now waiting for my stock seat to be modified by Terry Adcox. Can’t wait to try out the modified seat – heard lots of great things on this forum about Terrys modifications.
I’m really hoping at some point down the road to move into the Versys 1000. Although expensive, the 2019 has some really nice features (cruise control, better suspension(?), more comfortable and so on). Just a little apprehensive about the power and added weight. Saw the 2019 Versys at the bike show at the Stevens Center in Rosemont IL. Really sharp looking. The bike seemed to be drawing quite a bit of interest. Until then will keep on saving my pennies …
Been riding street bikes since the late 70’s. First street bike was a Honda CB125 (talk about tiny and slow – but got me to high school) followed by an Honda SL350 (the orange short track one), ’75 Kawasaki H2 and finally a 1985 RZ350 (bumble bee). Crashed/totaled the RZ in 1991. Traded motorcycles for wife/kids/dog/house. Started riding again 2002 on a 1981 CB650 followed by the Versys in 2014. What a “ride” it’s been!
Thanks for letting me ramble on. Please be safe!
