First Steps

Greetings, lords and ladies. Yesterday I confirmed a deal on a 2018 Versys 650, and I'll be picking it up from the dealer on Tuesday! I'm very excited, and a little nervous as well. My total riding time amounts to about 12 total hours on the MSF course, but that was about a month ago (had to convince the wife to let me take this next step and *actually* ride a bike).

I figured I'd go ahead and join the forum, since I can't sleep due to thinking about this first ride from the dealership.

Personal details: 23 years old, 5'11, 135lbs, full-time Twitch Streamer, part-time lyricist, and full-time warehouse worker.

Congrats on the new/first bike. You should really like the Versys. The power is really easy to handle for a beginner. And welcome to the forum. There is a lot of good information on here.

I don't care what you ride, just ride.

Remember one thing, if nothing else works: dress for the slide and not for the ride!! Welcome, the versys is a great beginner bike and keep the rubber side down always.

Welcome, congrats and...get some engine guards!!!

Where abouts are you located? You should post that and try to meet up with a few around your area. I'm sure they'd be willing to teach you a few things and help you out when you need some advice.

Welcome aboard. You've already been offered some very sound advice in my opinion. Keep in mind that the MSF course taught you some basic riding skills but provided little, in any, practical experience about riding in an environment filled with distracted drivers, impatient drivers, and those who should not be on public roads at all! Assume yourself to be invisible and adopt a "be forgiving rather than be injured" attitude toward thoughtless vehicle operators. Being "right" doesn't offer much comfort while in the hospital.

initially try to practice on quiet roads and sleepy neighborhoods when there's minimal traffic, to get more confidence. since you took the MSF course, you know what skill sets you have to develop. also, look up "motorman" for online videos regarding turning tips, feathering the clutch, etc. wear atgatt for your safety. strongly consider installing crashbars and grip/hand protectors, as everyone eventually drops their bike (who? me?) assume nobody sees you, that they are all trying to take you out, and ALWAYS have an escape plan for every situation. be careful and have fun. the versys is a great bike. this forum can help you get ideas to customize your bike to your needs, ergonomics and otherwise.
