Well the Versys is a really great, possibly the best all round street bike in it's price range IMO. But..... it is not the ideal off road machine in it's stock configuration. I would say it is more a 95% on road/5% off road bike. This is because the stock suspension is on the firm side which gives a sporty ride on pavement but it will rattle your fillings at any kind of speed on bumpy dirt roads. It is more like an economy version of the Ducati MultiStrada. Every adv bike is a trade off in off road ability vs higher speed on pavement handling and the Versys is biased heavily toward on pavement handling. That is not to say it will not handle the occasional graded, smooth dirt road very well but I would look to a KLR or similar bike for rougher terrain that is not passable to a car. The Versys will run circles around softer sprung, lower powered, off road machines on pavement but on rough terrain you want soft suspension, less weight, a lower center of gravity and a 21 inch front wheel. Just saying don't expect to take the Versys on Dakar type terrain and don't expect an off road biased bike to perform like the Versys on pavement either.
