Returning rider, 1st Kawi, Versys X 300, So Cal

Hello everybody,
So I just (last night) picked up a left over 2017 Versys X 300! Pretty excited about the practicality of this ride after attempting to resuscitate a 2007 Husky SM 610 for commuting duty, only to realize I'll never trust that bike to get me from point A to B. Though it was was a hoot from Point A, to wherever it decided to stop!
Cheers,
David

So my riding history - back in 2003 I got my motorcycle license and was a super commuter from La Mirada CA to UC Irvine. 27 miles, mostly (supposedly) freeway.
I started on a Yamaha V-Star 650 (was not crazy about the freeway nor the windblast). Graduating to a Honda Shadow ACE 1100. A much better motorcycle but a little bland. To spending most of my time and 20,000+ miles split on a 1995 BMW R1100RT and a 1996 YZF600R.
I laid the YZF down in 2005 (ran over a 2x4 dropped in the road by your friendly neighborhood guy hauling *ish around without tie-downs). Only a few weeks later, nearly ended up in the bed of a pickup by a guy who decided he had to switch lanes right NOW! In stop and go traffic. No contact, but it took all the brakes and skill I could muster to come out unscathed. Those event made me decide to put the bike away and move on. No bikes from 2007 - 2017...
In 2017, I bought a low mile, but uncared for 2007 Husky SM 610 and finally got around to the carb rebuild and other service the bike needed to run it around in March of 2018. I put a few hundred miles on her, but realized I would never trust this bike to commute on and it only encouraged me to ride like a hooligan, but my skills are not what they used to be.
Seeing the positive reviews on the Versys X 300, I knew it was a maybe, but I wanted to wait and see if they would make a 400 version in a year or two, but my local dealership put a leftover 2017 on super closeout, better than used bike pricing and I had to jump on it. Now here I am! I set my clock this morning, but also changed units from imperial to metric and I don't want to spend the rest of my days in kilometers, now here I am, looking for answers!
Cheers,
David

I'm an olde pharte with a somewhat similar history. I began riding in 1965. I took some time from riding between about 1995 and 2009. My skill level has not returned to my earlier level and at my age likely never will. I bought a 2009 DRZ400SM (one of the original hooligan bikes, I believe) when I decided to get back into it .... and discovered very quickly that hooliganism was definitely no longer an option!!

I was an adult when they switched from Imperial to metric measurement in Canada so I'm pretty much bilingual when it comes to units ... trilingual if you count Imperial gallons, US gallons and Litres. :-)
