Hello fellow Versys riders!

Thanks for allowing me the pleasure to enter the Versys forum!

Just purchased a brand new, 2018 Versys 650 yesterday. I only have 60 miles on it but am loving it!

My (quick as I can) story leading up to the Kawasaki...

Was always a Suzuki guy, owning every 800cc Suzuki had to offer at one point in time. 2 years ago I traded my Intruder for a 2006 Honda VTX 1300. Quickly fell in love with that bike...until a group ride and some of us went down. Insurance paid for a 2003 VTX 1800, which I loved...but couldn't turn that thing around in the driveway!
While at A.I.M. I took a test ride on some various motorcycles, one in particular was a Honda CTX 700 with DCT. 3 days later the VTX was gone and a brand new, 2015, CTX700 (manual) was in my garage!

Yet, deep within my psyche, was an itch for an ADV-type bike. I fought those thoughts until I rode a V-strom 1000. The bite got me! Fast forward to this past September. I found a used, 2006 V-strom 650 for cheap. Bought it, rode the heck out of it, but didn't want to deal with the fuel pump issues. I told myself if I ever came across a Honda NC700 with DCT at a good price I'd throw down some $$$. In December, just that happened. I found a used, 2013 NC700 with DCT in excellent condition!

As I LOVE my CTX and know that engine inside and out, the NC was an easy decision. Problem was, after a month and 1,200 miles, I just wasn't feeling that DCT. Functionality-wise, Honda nailed it! But I was always reaching for a non-existent clutch lever and shifter! I went to the local Honda shop, got a good offer on a 2014 NC (manual). As always, I waited and gave the other shop where I got my CTX a chance to offer me something on my NC towards a 2016 V-strom. When my sales guy came out with some numbers he told me he could get me on a 2018 Versys for cheaper than the 2016 V-strom. I was shocked as the Versys was 1) newer and, 2) more expensive on their website. I totally did NOT expect that and a deal that good, for a bike with an excellent reputation...how could I pass that up?!?!

So...

Welcome aboard from San Antonio, TX, and from a long ago resident of Tampa while assigned to US Special Operations Command. Very nice looking bike - fascinating color. I hope it provides you many enjoyable miles and adventures.

Thanks all! Yes, looking between the black and the grey...I guess I like the black a tad better.

So far, an awesome machine!

Hey Jeff!

Of course I know you! I'll tell you, after you bought your Vesys300 I started researching it a little. When I went to the dealer they had one there and I asked them about it. They told me it's a good bike but for what I was wanting it would probably feel a little under powered.

Either way, I like my new Versys and SOOO glad I went to that dealer, that day!

Haha!!! I wonder how many CTX'ers we can recruit to getting a Versys!!! The three of us should form a rock-n-roll band or something!

I really enjoy the versys 300 but to go from an extremely low-revving bike (CTX700) to a high revving bike (300) is different. But the 300 is very smooth and fun to ride. I think it has about the same amount of power as the CTX700 up until about 60 mph but the CTX gets up quicker after that of course. The 300 is just so light so that is probably why. I do miss the CTX though since it was very smooth and I think the DCT is a great invention. I would hear a very slight 'clunk' when it shifted but didn't feel the shift. And the mpg's are great on it.

I am getting about 60 mph so far which is ok for me. But I'm very surprised with the smoothness and power of the 300. But I'm glad you enjoy your new 650 and I bet that baby is pretty quick.

Ride safe,

JeffR

About 10-15 minutes away down CR561 from Tavares, itself a decent stretch.

There are, IRRC, two other places that are higher, one being just south of Florala Alabama, complete with a little park and marker.

I really like the view from Sugarloaf. I generally don't suffer from altitude sickness there but it has happened occasioanlly.

BTW, I'm hooked in with COG(Concours owners group) and we have rides and such going on from time to time, some of which I post up on this forum for those that wish to hook up. Getting to be a few folks over there that have a V, or something else not a Concours.

Our next meet up is for breakkie during Trailerweek over in Daytona Beach. Ping me up iff'n you wanna hook up and ride over. Happening on 17March. Non-freeway route planned.

Hello. I did consider the Versys 650 for a bit but then decided to go for my original choice, Versys-X 300. It is my first manual bike and preferred to get a good base before perhaps upgrading. Also where I live the 300 would be the perfect overall choice, with the true potential of the 650 used only when abroad since I am from a small island.
