Just got my endorsement, got my '09 Versys 650, and trying to get out daily to learn to ride!

Thanks in advance for the useful information!

Loving the backcountry roads

I'm lucky to live in an area with hills to the ocean on one side and cascade mountains on the other with endless two lane roads to enjoy.

I got passed by my first motorcycle on Saturday. I'm guessing he was doing close to double my speed!

junction city it quite nice make sure to keep practicing especially your low speed maneuvers and sudden braking (best to do in a empty parking lot) also good idea to learn how to do some basic maintenance if you dont know how to already. the versys is a great solid bike as long as you take care of it it can easily hit 100k miles , and also dont worry about how fast other people ride, trying to keep up with the dumber ones of us can lead to bad times, as they say ride your own ride, dont out ride your head light, and so on (all boils down to ride at the pace you feel safe at)

The more you ride the more you learn. The trick is to avoid catastrophe while learning. Take it easy at first and gradually add speed/lean. When things go wrong they go wrong rapidly.
The greatest danger comes from other road users and debris on the road.

Always assume that other motorists do not see you, as often times they don't.

If you see someone in the left turn lane opposite your direction slow down and be ready on the brakes as they may suddenly turn in front of you. Same thing for vehicles at cross street stop signs as they too can suddenly pull out right into your path. These two scenarios are how most riders get hurt.

Also if you hook up with a friend for a ride and he rides faster than your comfort level, cool your jets and just let him go. He will stop and wait for you up the road. I have seen way too many guys get hurt trying to keep up. It's not worth it.

Good luck and ride safe.

I use four simple rules that I developed over a few years of riding:

a) they (cage drivers, anybody with more than 0 wheels, INCLUDING motorcyclists): DON'T SEE YOU. NEVER assume they can see you. Act accordingly.

b) if they DO see you, THEY'LL TRY AND KILL YOU. (Think: "gee, that little bitty motorcycle won't care if I turn left in front of him...")

c) YOU HAVE NO RIGHT OF WAY. ZERO. NONE. You may be correct according to the law, but you're still dead. Don't be THAT person. Let the idiot turn in front of you. You're still alive, and they're MUCH, MUCH bigger than you. I NEVER assume that I have the right of way anywhere.

d) Never ride anything you can't pick up. If you can't pick it up, then Google HOW to pick it up.

No joke, every time I turn on the ignition key I repeat the above (simplified) to myself. It's saved my life countless times.
