Hello all. Bought a 2014 Versys 650 with about 2900 on the clock. This is my first bike and I have been having many first experiences in the last couple months. What a BLAST, what a BLAST, What a BLAST!!! Eager to share some of them with you and learn from your combined experiences. I have so many questions.

No Pee Wee for me

Hey Weljo. Pee Wee is a little before my time here. That was a baaaaad dude.
I fell in love with the Carolinas since my first sales trip here in '96. We've moved out into the rural areas now and I ride the country roads never seeing any traffic. But you wouldn't believe how much things have changed in the time we've been here.

Thanks for the greeting Pattonkdzn. I saw in your maiden post you're in TR. I work in Greenville, make the drive everyday. That's drive, not ride! Too much of a ride for a newbie. Lovin' that it's still riding season but don't anticipate any riding below 40F.

Hey Backcountryadventure! Apologies to you and pattonkdzn on my mix up. It would seem that Versys activity is up in South Carolina.

Today brought another first in my riding experience; interstate travel! I got to say, it was every bit as nerve-racking as my very first ride. I felt like a styrofoam cup blowing around at 75+, especially in some dirty air behind a big rig. I hung in there for about 15 miles. At this point I can't imagine spending several hours in that environment. This will take some getting used to.

I have anticipated keeping even long hauls to the back roads, but I would like to be capable of highway riding none-the-less. So, to the more experienced; does interstate travel on a 650 ever become comfortable?

Yes, I rode the highways from Ft.Worth Tx to Los Angeles Ca. 850 miles the first day and the remaining 550 miles the next...

MY experience on both Gen 1 and Gen 3 V 650s, over MANY long rides (X-Canada this summer; D2D several times; etc) is that there's NO problem on the 650s, and the fact that I raised the front of the seat by 3/4" has made THEM all-day comfortable for me...!

The X-Canada ride (Gen 3) was w/ the OEM windshield set at its highest, while the D2D was w/ a PUIG 5999 (Gen 3), or a 'modded' Yamaha Majesty windshield on BOTH Gen 1s, LOTS of rain, GOOD protection, MANY 10+ hour days....

I'm pretty certain I'll never rack up those kind of miles. But if you do it's important to have a good backrest! Nice packing.

It was pretty comfy. Especially when i put my feet up on the highway pegs and just leaned back.... I had shipped what i thought was enough to the house in Cali and didn't load the bike up until just before leaving that night at 1:00am then i realized i had too much stuff but said oh well and took off on my trip.

Welcome from Alaska and a fellow Gen II owner. Don't worry you will get more comfortable as the miles tick off. Have you taken any rider education courses? They will give you LOTS of great information and improve your skill set on the bike.

Thanks AlaskaJeff. Yes, my son and I took the first MSF course at a community college. It was very informative and I wouldn't mind taking the next one (intermediate?). But, you're lucky to break 20 mph in the first class. Since I live on a 55 mph road, my first real ride was a scream. Had to get with the program in the first 1/2 mile.

I think at this point it is the speed, buffeting, lots of cars combo that is making me squeeze the grips til toothpaste comes out. That, plus my shifting preference keeps my revs at or below 5k. At highway speeds there's the engine rev component too. I'm sure I'll settle down with experience but at this stage I'm looking for the first exit ramp after the end of the on-ramp!
