New Member - First New Bike

Hi newbie to this forum, started looking for a new 4-stroke rider about a month ago and stumbled upon this great forum. Long story short, will be picking up a 2012 Versys next weekend

I have been riding since the early 70's and currently own a number of vintage bikes. My main interest over the past decade has been Kawasaki triples. I do the restoration work myself including motor rebuilds and currently have a '73 S2 350, '73 H1 500, and '74 S3 400. About 3 years ago, longing for a more reliable and better handling daily rider, I stumbled upon a mint '78 Suzuki GS750ES while searching for a nice Z900 and bought it. While it is bulletproof and comfortable for longer rides, it is heavy and not near as fun as the lighter small displacement 2-strokes. I longed for a ride that combined reliability with spirited handling and started looking at the new mid-size bikes available. After riding the VStrom, Versys, and F650, the decision was quite easy for me.

Looks like this forum is a great resource for getting the most out of my new purchase. Glad to be here.....

Gidday

Hi Jim,
I did pretty much the same when choosing my Versys. Starting looking at the F650GS and the V -Strom then luckily through much research and a great test ride decided on the Versys. I got a great deal on a low mileage 08 model but did consider buying a new one.
Great riding position and just the right amount of power I think.
I have been riding bikes since 1980 in NZ, Ireland and now Oz. I don't own a car and hopefully won't need to for many years.
Keep riding and stay upright.

Cheers

Welcome!

My brother also had a GS750ES in black. He added a Vetter fairing, bored it to an 800, added a CalFab swingarm, installed one of the first K40 radar detectors, installed a microswitch on the fairing to cancel the brake light and rigged up a lever under the tank that dropped the license plate.

And, no, he didn't run 'shine.

But those were the days....indeed!

Thanks to all for the welcome, looking forward to picking up the new bike. My challenge will be to get it broken in by late August so I can have it ready for the road trip. Plan to put the first 150 miles on it riding home from the dealership in Punta Gorda back to Orlando. I've already got a route planned out - all back roads.

Thanks! It is fun to be sure re-jetted with original DENCO chambers, just a bit too loud around town, but when it gets on the pipe - it is musical

Had to search for quite a while to find a nice set of period correct lesters which I have always preferred over the spoked wheels.

The 73 H1D is a nice version of the 500 having the same CDI ignition as the H2 750's with a nice hot spark which keeps the plugs clean.

This used to have a wildly ported 750 motor in it but I blew it up a couple of years ago (1st attached pic is of the 750 fresh topend ready for installation, balance of pics show the aftermath of the piston seizure). After the rod separated from the piston, being about 20 miles from home, I said WTF and rode it home on two cylinders. After this experience I decided to tone it back down with a 500 motor.

Hey jim-k - check this site out:

I broke BOTH my Vs in on the ride home from the dealer, around 50 miles! Then changed the oil, and again at 500 miles, then synthetic.

Try it - you'll like it! (Many listers have done the same.)
