New Versys owner

Just replaced a Ninja 650R with a 2011 Versys. If the Versys had been available in California in 08 when I bought the Ninja I might have bought it instead back then.

2 of the 3 bikes I'd owned previously had 180 degree parallel twins, and this time I expected to get something altogether different. But after some bike shopping, I chose a Versys.

My favorite bike so far.

Mods to date (I've had the bike less than a day):
Gerbings power outlet
Swingarm spools

Still to come:
Hand guards
Tail rack
Side racks
Engine guards

I think that will be it. I put maybe 16500 miles on the Ninja and around 50 on the Versys so far, so I have a lot to learn. The Ninja was pretty good as that sort of bike goes, but the Versys has far more relaxed ergos, and I think the seat is more comfortable too--though I haven't spend all day on it yet.

I can comment on this- I went from an '06 Ninja to '08 Versys last summer.

Quite frankly, the Ninja was more fun for most street/canyon carving. I got better mpg with it, too, and with the Ventura system I had pretty good carrying capacity. I REALLY miss the kick in the butt around 8-9K rpm. However, I felt I could never get the riding ergonomics to be comfortable for the type of sport-touring I wanted to do. I'm long-legged, long-armed and small-assed. I put a Corbin on the V (at the factory- totally customized 2" up, 2" back) and rode it almost 7k miles before winter set in. I've taken it places I would never have even thought of going on the Ninja, including some dirt and gravel jaunts. It just suits me me better... and still rips the twisties just fine. My 56 year-old knees thank me every time I get off the bike.

I had plenty of luggage capacity on the Ninja. All I've got so far on the Versys is a little tail bag and a cargo net. I still have the side cases in the pic below, but the top case went with the bike. When I get a rack at first I'll use one of the side cases on top. Speaking of that, what is this about top and side racks not being compatible on the Versys?

I'm going from an '05 500R to the '11 V. The 500's afterburners kicked in around 6k, and pulled strong to redline. I notice the V pulls till about 9k, then it just disappears. Certainly a different riding experience! I too have long legs and never could quite get settled into the Ninja. After about an hour on the bike, things really started to hurt. So far the V seems much more comfortable, but the seat's forward pitch is a little bothersome. We'll see how it feels after a few weeks i guess!
