Hello from Denver, CO

Hi all!!

I have been tooling around this site for awhile and thought I should post. I sold my 2005 BMW r1200gs earlier this year and am shopping for another bike. Assuming the better half gives me the nod. (1st Baby on the way and in the process of selling home and buying new one to prepare for baby.)

I liked the BMW but I started having some shifting issues and when I took it in was told that it would cost close to $1000 just to get to the area where the problem may be. NO THANKS! So I sold it.

I'm looking for a bike that I can change the oil, fill it up with gas, and GO! And when it's time for service I don't have to skip a mortgage payment.

I test rode a 2009 Versys and felt that the power was great and felt a lot lighter than the BMW, but there was still plenty of power.

I like the look of the 2011 Versys, but I just saw a picture of the 2012 V-Strom 650 yesterday and like it too. The V-strom seems like it's going to cost a whole lot more to get into and set up the way I would like though.

I also like that if you look hard enough right now you can get a 2011 Versys for around $6000.

Here are the goodies I was thinking about adding once it's time:
- Seahorse 720 cases with the SW-Motech Quick lock side carrier rack
- Fenda extenda
- Givi windscreen
- Oxford heaterz heated grips
- SW-Motech aluminum engine guard/ skidplate
- SW-Motech crashbars/ engine guard
- Acerbis handguards

I also saw the aluminum panniers and a whole setup you can get from happy trails and it looks good to.

Hello all and I welcome any thoughts or suggestions.

You're shopping for accessories and you don't yet have the bike!

Good man!

Hi mate.
Welcome to (almost) versys ownership. I too looked at the V-strom, but it was just too huge up-close. I didn't really like the styling too, so I got a 2010 Mk2 Versys and am really glad that I did.
How's Denver at the moment? I used to live in Cherry Creek, so I guess that you haven't seen much grass for a while and won't for a bit yet.
Happy riding (and farkling).

Hello from Denver, CO

Englishman,

Cherry Creek is a nice place to live! I'm sure you remember how quickly the weather changes here. It's been cold lately but today and tomorrow the high is supposed to be around 55 F. I love it here and if you pick and choose days and have the right equipment....you can ride all through the winter.

I went to a dealer yesterday and the KLR caught my eye. I've read up on the comparisons and know the versys will be much more fun on the pavement. The 2011 versys the dealer had the previous time I went there was gone. The salesman said they took it to parts to gear it up to be more off road worthy. I'm interested to see what they add to it.

The new Wee-strom looks better than the old one, no doubt. But for all the changes in the plastic, it's still pretty much the same bike. As far as a more economical replacement for your GS, it's more of a direct swap; similar wheel base and wheel sizes.
The Versys feels a lot smaller because it is, though the weight difference between it and the Wee isn't that great. You won't have the choice of DS rubber on the Vs, but you can get street rubber in some very sticky compounds.
You can outfit it like a mini GS, and many of us do. It's just a lot better at the Strasse than the Glende!.
After coming off the Beemer, either bike will be a pleasant surprise; Cheap to Buy, Cheap to Run, Cheap to Keep.

Hey

Welcome from "the mont" just up north a bit. If you get in a Versys you will not regret the choice. Its a great bike. I got out yesterday b-4 the weather turned sour. It was a great day for a ride.

Prior to the Versys I was considering a BMW. Like you alluded to I didn't want to bleed out the cash over time.

Happy Holidays.
