Accidentally bought a Versys

UPDATE: Picked it up today! A couple pics are on post 19

Ok, not quite accidentally, but it was a bit of an impulse.

I wanted a Ninja since I was a kid and 20 years later, I bought a 2001 Ninja EX250 as a learner in June 2010 (and got my license in July 2010).

This year, I decided I wanted something a little quicker and started looking at a 650R or a Versys. I went to the local Kawasaki dealer in May and looked at used ones. They had two Versys's, a stock 2008 and a lowered 2008 with a larger windscreen. They were 5899 and 5999 but that sounded really high so I passed.

Last week I stopped by just to look and they still had the lowered 2008 (which I wanted after reading about Speedy's products here) with a new price of 4999. I asked if they would do 4500 on layaway (cause I have to sell the 250) but they said I'd have to pay in full. I said I would if they could store it for the winter and pay with a credit card and they said yes, so I bought it! Unfortunately, I won't get to take it home until March...

Damn. That is pure torture. I'd just give the 250 away so I could start riding the V.

You can sell the 250 better in the spring. Still market for them.

wish I had the extra scratch to take the 250 off your hands...I saved one from the boneyard several years ago and brought it back to life..was a FUN moto! and like all my side projects, I had to sell it...you should have no problem selling it in short order...welcome to the best moto forum on the 'net!

Sounds like you did almost the same thing as me. I walked into the dealer planning to buy a brand new Ninja 650r and drove out on a brand new Versys. I really had a hard time deciding but I went with the Versys because I am over 6 feet and the Ninja was just slightly cramped for me. The Ninja fit was not too bad but the V was a better fit. The Versys fit me like a glove. They are both great bikes but even so, I still wonder how I would have liked the Ninja..

I bought a brand new Ninja 650R in 2007 after spending 4 months on a 2004 Ninja 250R. Rode the entire Blue Ridge Parkway both ways that summer. In 2008 the Versys was introduced and I knew it would replace the Ninja one day because it just fit me better. Traded the Ninja this past may for the 2011 Versys. I had put 14,000 miles on the Ninja in 4 years. Put half that on the Versys in 6 months.

Enjoy your new ride.

Well, I donated my Ninja to a church that restores cars for the needy... they'll handle all the sales details and whatever value they get for it, they'll put on a tax deductible receipt for me.

It's supposed to be 50 tomorrow in Chicago... maybe I'll go pick up my Versys a little early...

Nicely done... but at this time we need to see some pictures, and to hear how did it go on your first ride.

Slow down, and you'll get there faster!!!

It snowed so no go picking it up in February... but it's a beautiful 57 and sunny in Chicago today so I went and picked it up today!

It rides great! I took it on the highway and hit 70 without even realizing it (it took a little more effort on the 250). I can see some of the vibration concerns (I had to take care of the buzz at 3k), but it's not any worse than my 250 was and it's more stable in the wind and the power is very nice.

Ok, attempt 2 on the pics. They're from my phone so not the greatest but it's a start!

Congrats. I suspect you will like it better unlowered if you have an inseam greater than 30-31 inches or so.
