New Member - Advice on buying used Versys

Hi all,

I am considering buying a Versys. Would like to buy a used one and would appreciate any advice on what to look / look out for.

In TX (Houston) if anyone is interested in selling, let me know.

I have had about 20 bikes in my life. Everything from dirt bikes (yz250) to a Goldwing (gl1800) to scooters. Currently riding a kit bobber bike.

CL Posting: http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/2515819307.html

Looking for something comfortable to ride in the city.

Ben.

I got mine used in a trade. It only had 850 miles on it and it was an 09 (Sold new 2/2011). There seem to be a lot of 09's that were sold new in 2011. Mine had no flaws and it seems completely awesome. It now has 1025 miles. I would look for low miles, good condition, and talk to the owner, you can usually tell if they are the kind who treat something good or ride it like they stole it and look to bury it young. The guy I got it from was all about breaking it in by the book and doing the first service when the book says...that is always a bonus. There is one for sale here now, and he says in the craigslist ad it was dropped in the driveway and one of the bags are damaged. I do not know if I would avoid that, but if you go for something like that, it may get you a good discount if you wait a bit, let it sit on craigslist for a while, then approach him with an offer. I know this one has been on CL for a while @ $4800. He may be ready to deal. (OKC).

Best of luck in your search.

Garage
Ignore buzzing from the dash/cowling as this is common and very easy to fix yourself with foam tape (lots of threads on this site on the subject). You can always use this as a factor to to negotiate a lower price if the current owner is ill informed of this issue

Thanks all. Ended up with a brand new 2011.

Went out to pick up a used 09, but missed it by a few hours. Was actually delivering the bike I just sold.

I found a new 09 and was just about to make the deal when another dealer called and gave me a great deal on a new 11. Paid $7,150 out the door (with TT&L).

Only put a few hours on it, but very impressed with the bike. Had the wife out for a couple of rides around town. Pretty comfortable and capable with a passenger. Shifting (especially getting to neutral) is a bit clunky, but I suspect it just needs a bit of break in. Trying to keep the RPM's under 4K is a bitch, but will be nice to the new bike!
