Finally decided on a bike - Not the Versys

I have been a lurker here for a while. I kind od sat in the shadows and absorbed the knowledge that is passed on here. I finally decided on a bike and got the V-strom 650 ABS / Pearl white. I really liked both bikes but it came down to several things

1: The V-strom was more comfortable for my wife. Most important reason.

2: The v-strom has ABS

3: The V-strom will run on 8regular fuel (although I see on here that some have run the Versys on 87 as long as it does not ping). This would not have been a deal breaker.

I have been researching bikes for about 3 years and was driving my wife and co-workers crazy. As soon as I decided that the V-strom was the bike I wanted, my wife went and bought me one. What a great lady.

I will continue to read the forums and will try to contribute when appropriate. Thanks to all who provided me with their insight when I first joined.

good luck with the new ride.

But I have never heard of "V"s having trouble with 87 octane.

All the best with the V-Strom, I would of thought they would of brought the ABS version of the Versys to your part of the world as it is available here on the 2011 version.

Me neither, my runs fine on 87 and even just as well on a 10% ethenol mix too....

Unhappy Better join another Forum

Psp501,
I would look up the V-Strom Riders International Forum or the StromTrooper Forum for more V-Strom information. I owned V-Stroms from 2002 until 2010.
Very informational forums with a lot of good members.
I always wondered why my Versys would top out at 149mph, I have been running regular grade fuel!

Congrats on the new bike! After three years of research (?!), let the riding begin!

The fuel was a non-issue. I Saw many posts here that told me that 87 would run in the bike. The comfort of my main passenger was the deciding factor. As for the three years of research, I over research everything. It drives my family crazy. Also, 3 years ago, I had 2 kids that just started college $$$$.
Thanks again for all the info.

Enjoy the Wee-Strom! Great choice on the ABS, wish I had it on my Versys. Pillion comfort is crucial if it is a regular occurrence.

Garage
What makes you think the Versys is not designed for 87. Same engine that I had in my Ninja 650R and it was designed for 87. Are you confusing US octane with European octane ratings or am I missing something?

I liked the WeeStrom back in '06 but couldn't get past the looks and two valve covers to remove to check the valves. Enjoy your new ride. Hopefully you will never have to test the ABS.

As a Versys owner – and given your reasons 1 & 2 – I think you made the right choice. If I was going to carry a passenger, I would choose the V-strom too.

Enjoy the new ride!
